Why do people continue to hold onto this notion that you can trade inferior/injured players for superior healthy players as if the other team's GM and FO just collectively fell off a turnip truck?

 

Cordero has zero, nada, zilch trade value as he undergoes two knee surgeries and the requisite rehabilitation. Oliver's value is only slightly higher than Cordero's. Any GM who traded their first-string catcher (regardless of his supposedly bad clubhouse karma) for a cripple and/or a pitcher with a 7+ ERA would be out of work by lunchtime.

 

One of three things will happen starting Tuesday. We'll either package prospects as we did in 2003, do a blockbuster deal that breaks up the nucleus of the team or we'll do nothing and try to position ourselves to work the waiver wire and revisit players like Rick Helling who, in the twilight of his career may not have what it takes to fulfill his desire to be an MLB starter and ultimately settles for the relief role he thrived in last summer.

 

Let's face it the fans in Baltimore were very happy to see Helling depart their fair city last season.

 

My guess is more prospects will depart, including Hermidia or anyone else who can bring this team either hitting (where to you play him without a bigger trade?) or a reliever capable of filling the role Chad Fox vacated when injured. June 15 is the beginning of the summer trading period as it includes players signed for 2004 as free agents.

 

In two years Admin Beinfest has done right by us fans. I expect he'll do it again.

i'll agree that the production from redmond (and so far treanor) has been good for a catcher. i dont think an upgrade there would hurt, but i'd like to see treanor get a few more starts before we pass on him. a catching platoon that can manage to hit .280 is pretty good and shouldnt really be high on the potential upgrade list.

 

i'll have to disagree about niner though. as it stands right now, he and sea bass are the biggest holes in our lineup. his average is deceptively acceptable--he has been absolutely horrific at hitting with men on base and producing RBIs.

 

all in all i wouldn't mind having pierzynski's bat, but our bullpen is a much bigger need... i'd much rather pump $3.5 million into that.

 

as for where to insert that all-important super bat (which we probably could use)... at the moment its looking like LF. its certainly much easier to acquire an outfielder who hits well than a catcher who does.

I wouldnt do it because Redmond is doing a good job as a backup catcher and I have a lot of faith in Treanor. He has been looking rea;;y good out there. He is getting some solid basehits. I really think we should get rid of Castro and give Matt a try at starting as the catcher. Afterall he cant be worse than Castro-lol.

Although I don't think it's necessary because of Redmond, Treanor and Willlingham if we are going to add an impact bat to lineup it should be at the catcher position. It's either now or next winter when the pickings will be slim.

The Giants would be getting rid of Felix Rodriguez and AJ P's contracts for Oliver and Cordero's - who are both FA's next year. That is a good thing if you are trying to spend money in other areas. Especially if you fall out of contention.

 

But I dont see a deal like this happening for the Marlins because they would have to take on significant salary and get very little in return. There is a reason that AJ P is being shopped and Felix Rodriguez attached to him. If only in rumor.

 

I also dont think we should make any deal right now. I think our catching platoon is very solid and will not let us down for the year. I think Redmond and Treanor are both solid hitters and strong defensive catchers too.

 

So, no thanks, I pass. But, if you must make a deal for a catcher, take a look at the A's Melhuse. Doesnt play much, but could be very solid if given a chance to play everyday. He is 32, and would be a solid veteran who knows his job and would play with great effort to keep that starting gig. Cheap too. Did I mention he was cheap? (But for that, I would rather stay with Treanor.)

He is hitting .242, however that is up after a tremendous slump to start the season. His 22 RBIs, while nothing spectacular, are 5th on the team. He's racked up 83 Total Bases, he's gotten his slugging percentage up to .401, but the most important stat is his numbers with RISP. He is hitting a respectable .296, with .500 SLG%.

 

In June, he is hitting .343 with a nice .571 Slugging. For those that worship stats, he's up to .923 OPS for the month. All in all pretty respectable from a supposed "hole".

Looks like McKeon is now sold on this idea as he continues to protect him by hitting Redmond after him.

Yeah there were some of us that were talking about this before the season. He was never made for the 8 because of the pitches in the dirt. While he is laying off them he still doesn't have that much patience (only 6 walks) but he is getting more to hit and it is paying dividends.

Yes, I agree totally (and also with you, PBMarlin). I have constantly screamed about AGon hitting 8th is a terrible thing for him and you cant accurately gauge his offensive performance because of it. Hitters get nothing to hit in the 8th spot because of the pitcher hitting behind them. Moving AGon up has been great (I know this is crazy, but I would love to see him hit #2 - but not as long as we have Castillo).

 

I also dont think Wilson is expendable. We may have SeaBass locked up, but you can always give Wilson a look for cheap and use that money elsewhere.

Since heating up it really hasn't mattered who's hitting behind him. He hit well in the few games he has batted in front of the pitcher.

Same as last year. Alex is just a streaky hitter.
