June 14, 200422 yr It really isn't a question of whether we get relief help or another bat. We need both, and certainly are considering both facets. Last year we were fortunate to bring up Willis to address starting pitching, and Cabrera for hitting. Beinfest continued by acquiring Urbina, Helling and Fox for the bullpen, and Conine when Lowell went on the DL. This year our starting pitching is set. Relief pitching, particularly a set up man is the greatest need. But we also need to get another RBI guy. Conine just isn't getting the job done. Our whole line-up would be much more effective if we got a good #3 hitter who can effectively move JP and Luis around the basepaths. Lowell and Cabrera can handle the #4 and #5 spots. Choi, Alex and Redmond can hold down the back end of the order.
June 14, 200422 yr I think you can always improve a team's talent, but I dont think that it is necessary for the Marlins to just make a deal. I think they have the talent in place to win right now, and frankly, I dont think we should make a deal until the market has been set. I dont want to see us overbid just to grab someone like Beltran when we could have someone with similar numbers for much cheaper. .269 12 HR isnt all that staggering. Conine is hitting better - admittedly struggling - although with less pop. No reason to make a drastic change - yet. I also think we need to be patient with the bullpen. I think Oliver and Howard could be real solid for us. I especially like Howard's fastball - if he can throw other pitches for strikes, he could be lights out. Neu also will have to be given time to get on track. Perisho has been pretty solid. Benitez is the best reliever in the NL East right now and you could argue in the NL. I think we are going to be fine.
