June 28, 200422 yr SOCCER|COLOMBIA 2, ARGENTINA 0 Shutout pleases Colombia coach Colombia beat Argentina in an exhibition at the Orange Bowl and impressed its coach, who is evaluating the team's roster. BY SANTOS A. PEREZ sperez@herald.com A team in an evaluation phase received positive reviews from its coach Sunday night. Colombia, seeking the right formula after a forgettable first phase of qualifiers for the next World Cup, defeated Argentina 2-0 in an exhibition match played in front of a split Argentina-Colombia crowd of 32,415 at the Orange Bowl. ''We knew we were playing a strong rival with a long tradition,'' Colombia coach Reinaldo Rueda said. ``Colombia played aggressively, yet organized.'' Colombia had an early goal from Mahler Tressor Moreno, then secured the victory as Sergio Herrera scored with 13 minutes remaining. Herrera's goal came with Argentina playing at a man disadvantage after the red-card ejection of Andres D'Alessandro for a flagrant elbowing foul on Colombia's Jairo Patino. For Rueda, who took over the squad earlier this year, the solid performance against Argentina helps build the team he is finalizing for next month's Copa America in Peru and the next round of World Cup qualifiers in September. ''The plan is to continue evaluating players to give us the best team possible,'' Rueda said. ``Hopefully, our team will be well adjusted to have a good Copa America.'' Colombian players already are noticing a difference under Rueda's leadership. ''The coach believes in his players, and the players believe in their coach,'' goalkeeper Miguel Calero said. Calero helped shut down Argentina with six saves. ''We beat an important opponent,'' Calero said. ``Now we have to put all of our thinking toward Copa America.'' Sunday night's match was the first of two U.S. exhibitions for Argentina, which will play Peru on Wednesday night at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. Although Argentina controlled the ball for most of the first 20 minutes, Colombia struck first on Moreno's goal in the 22nd minute. David Ferreira fed Moreno with a crossing pass from the right wing. Moreno sent an arching shot just outside the penalty area over Argentine goalkeeper Pablo Cavallero. In the 32nd minute, Moreno ran unmarked toward the Argentine goal area when he was brought down with a hard tackle by defender Gabriel Heinze. The play resulted in a yellow-card foul, but Ferreira's free kick went over the crossbar. Argentina's Mauro Rosales had a second scoring chance in the 36th minute, but Calero dived to deflect his 12-yard shot. Colombia capitalized on D'Alessandro's ejection as the field suddenly opened for repeated runs on goal. The offensive push eventually paid off when Patino fed Herrera with a ball on the right side of the half circle. Herrera one-timed a shot that eluded Cavallero and landed inside the left post. ''When a team works together, then these are the results it will achieve,'' Patino said. ``The plan becomes much clearer.''
