July 4, 200422 yr Posted on Sun, Jul. 04, 2004 MARLINS NOTEBOOK Loria open to trade talk By CLARK SPENCER cspencer@herald.com Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria wouldn't indicate Saturday whether he would commit money to upgrading the roster before the July 31 trade deadline, but said he would consider all proposals designed to improve the team. ''I'm willing to sit and listen,'' he said. ``We've got a lot of time left.'' Loria gave the go-ahead on last month's trade with the Chicago White Sox in which the Marlins acquired reliever Billy Koch, a deal that added $500,000 to Florida's payroll. Last year, Loria approved midseason trades for reliever Ugueth Urbina and outfielder Jeff Conine. Loria said he is informed of any discussions, but that, since the Koch trade, ``nobody has come to me yet to decide what is needed.'' ''If we need to do something and [general manager Admin Beinfest] comes to me with something we need to consider, then we'll look at it,'' Loria said. Loria is certain of one thing: The Marlins need to play better. ''I would like to see us winning,'' he said. ``I have a lot of confidence in our players that we'll do that. We will come out of this slump.'' SPOONEYBARGER HOPES TO RETURN THIS YEAR The Marlins aren't counting on Tim Spooneybarger to pitch this season, but the reliever said there's a chance he could join the bullpen for a possible September stretch drive. ''There's a good chance,'' said Spooneybarger, who is working his way back from ligament-replacement surgery on his right elbow and expects to begin throwing off a mound within the next two weeks. ``The way I'm feeling, I'm definitely trying to make a push to get back.'' Spooneybarger underwent Tommy John surgery Aug. 22. It took A.J. Burnett, who had the same surgery, 13 months to play again. Burnett began throwing off a mound in late January and pitched in his first major-league game June 3, a gap of about four months. But, in between, Burnett shut down his throwing program for about three weeks because of loose scar tissue in the elbow, something Spooneybarger said he already has experienced during his rehabilitation. Spooneybarger also said, because he's a reliever, he might not require as much time as Burnett to be game-ready. ''I don't have to build up to 100 pitches,'' said Spooneybarger, the Marlins' set-up man last season until the elbow injury flared up. Spooneybarger said if he is not feeling 100 percent, he will delay his comeback until next season. KEEPING THE FAITH Manager Jack McKeon considers himself a good Catholic, rarely misses morning Mass, sprinkles holy water on bats when they don't yield results and prominently displays a framed proclamation from Pope John Paul inside his office at Pro Player Stadium. Yet it was at the Marlins' expense that a Roman Catholic nun from Indiana won $10,000. Sister Susanna Helms won the money after her name was chosen during a radio station contest that hinged on the Reds hitting back-to-back home runs. Barry Larkin and Sean Casey did just that in Cincinnati's 9-7 victory over Florida on May 31 at Pro Player. ''Everybody's against us right now,'' McKeon said. ``I'm going to have to work on her.'' Helms said she planned to donate the money to her religious order, the Sisters of St. Francis in Oldenburg, Ind. Article
