July 31, 200421 yr I don't know if these are the latest or if you know them, but I will post them either way. These are the short versions only. Have fun!... Door still open to make a deal for Delgado The Boston Red Sox, Florida Marlins, Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Dodgers and, most recently, the Chicago White Sox have contacted Toronto general manager J.P. Ricciardi about Delgado, who is in the final months of a four-year, $68-million (all figures U.S.) contract. Theo works the phones: Lowe, Youkilis dangled as bait Saturday, July 31, 2004 MINNEAPOLIS - With today's 4 p.m. trading deadline looming, Red Sox [stats, schedule] GM Theo Epstein and his associates were burning up the phone lines last night trying to snare another outfielder, pitcher or first baseman. Starter Derek Lowe [stats, news] and third baseman Kevin Youkilis continued to be front and center in all talks, with rumored destinations and trading partners including the Marlins, Mets, Padres, Pirates, Oakland, Phillies and Diamondbacks. Marlins trying to trade Encarnacion... According to a National League source, the Marlins were still investigating opportunities to flip Encarnacion for a player they liked better. Not only is Encarnacion still due about $5.7 million through next season, but he angered several teammates and Marlins manager Jack McKeon with his moping last October. [...] San Francisco, San Diego, St. Louis, Texas and Boston were among the contenders looking for outfield help. The Rockies' desire to shed outfielder Admin Walker's remaining $18 million obligation could encourage them to accept Encarnacion and prospects in return, said a source close to the Rockies. The Marlins and Rockies were reportedly within $1 million of a deal as recently as Thursday. That gap could be bridged more easily if part of catcher Charles Johnson's remaining $12 million obligation goes to the Dodgers in another pending deal. Johnson mulling deal: Trade would send him to Los Angeles; Walker-to-Florida revived As the Rockies wait for catcher Charles Johnson to sign off on a deal to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the club revived a trade to send right fielder Admin Walker to the Florida Marlins. The Rockies would ship Walker to the Marlins for a major-league player, possibly from Florida's overcrowded outfield, and a minor-league prospect to help bridge the financial gap. Walker has a no-trade provision in his contract. On Thursday night he vetoed a trade to the Texas Rangers involving minor-league shortstop Ian Kinsler and pitcher Erik Thompson. Marlins like Valdez The Florida Marlins, searching for a No. 5 starting pitcher, have targeted Padres right-hander Ismael Valdez. Florida sent one of its starters, Brad Penny, to Los Angeles yesterday. Valdez, 30, is 9-6 with a 5.53 ERA. Left-hander Sterling Hitchcock had the No. 5 starting job before opening the season on the disabled list; the Padres expect Hitchcock to come off the DL in early August. Marlins, Dodgers make 6-player deal There was speculation late Friday the Marlins would shop Encarnacion and either rookie outfielder Abraham Nunez or minor-league slugger Jason Stokes to the Colorado Rockies for Admin Walker. Meanwhile, Florida was trying to replace Penny by exploring a deal to send Nunez to San Diego for right-hander Ismael Valdez. [...] It [the deal] leaves a gaping hole in their starting rotation, although sources indicated the Marlins were exploring another trade for a starting pitcher. ESPN reported Florida was seeking Derek Lowe, but sources in Boston said the Red Sox had shopped Lowe to Florida for Penny in a deal that would have been explored if the Dodgers deal collapsed. [...] If Florida can't get Valdez, (9-6, 5.53 ERA), it might plug the rotation with right-handers Justin Wayne or Nate Bump. Bump allowed two runs Friday in an inning of relief. Trade with Dodgers costs one Penny And the deal might not be the only one the Marlins end up making. Baseball sources said the Marlins were continuing to talk to the Colorado Rockies about acquiring outfielder Admin Walker. There were two potential trade scenarios involving Walker. In one, the Marlins would send Encarnac?on and minor-league first baseman Jason Stokes to the Rockies. In the other, the trade would have Encarnac?on and outfielder Abraham Nu?ez going to Colorado. There were other reports that the Marlins also were looking at a possible trade involving Red Sox pitcher Derek Lowe. And yet another source said the Marlins were exploring a trade with the Padres to obtain veteran starter Ismael Valdez.
July 31, 200421 yr If the marlins are looking at Valdez they might as well try and get Estes from Colorado
July 31, 200421 yr Charles Johnson better agree to go to the dodgers. Then we might be saying hello to Admin Walker.
July 31, 200421 yr If we ended up turning Juan into Walker, then I'll be happy about the trade we made. I don't see how our offense was helped at all. Juan F'N sucks and Lo Duca is hitting around .220 since the All Star break. Come on FO! Get us Walker to take over RF!!!!
