August 9, 200421 yr I know it's early to grade this trade.... But there were a lot of people who thought that this was STUPID trade for the sox.... Each player has thrown two starts... Contreras - (1-0) - Left both games with the lead - 14IP, 10H, 12K, 2BB, 5R, 3ER, .086WHIP, .200 BAA, 1.93ERA (starts vs. KC and Cle) Loaiza - (0-1) - Left both games while behind - 12IP, 16H, 8K, 5BB, 10R, 9ER, 1.75WHIP, .320BAA, 6.75ERA (strarts vs. Oak and Tor) The yankees said they wanted consistency. The Yankees said they wanted someone who wasn't going to feast on bad teams. Loiaza did just that, feasting on TB, KC and Toronto early in the season. Loiaza has been very consistant, 6IP 5R in each of his yankee start. He was booed off the mound today, and could be headed to the pen when Mussina comes off the DL. The White Sox wanted to divorce themselves from Loaiza, who was quietly asking for $$$$, before he completely destroyed all hope they had this season. Loaiza is going to get a pretty big payday this offseason, and some team is going to end up very unhappy when they have him. Supposedly the Sox have corrected Contreras' set-up. It seems that he was tipping his pitches, and they were one of the many teams to figure this out... But Contreras' periphirals both this season(.244 BAA, 1.34WHIP, 7.17K/BB), and on his career(.228BAA, 1.26WHIP, 8.27K/BB) remain much better than Loaiza(except last year)-- Many were quick to call it a loss for the Sox, but if loaiza had started both games for the Sox, they'd have lost, and be sitting 8 games back of the Twins. Dead in the AL Central. As it is they won both of Contreras' starts, and sit 5.5 games back, on life support in the AL Central.
