August 2, 200422 yr 08/01/2004 7:39 PM ET Marlins endure first rainout of 2004 Makeup set for part of doubleheader on Sept. 14 By Joe Frisaro / MLB.com MIAMI -- A heavy downpour that stopped play in the top of the fourth inning on Sunday resulted in the Marlins' first rainout of the season. The Marlins and Expos will make up the game in a doubleheader on Sept. 14, beginning at 5:05 p.m. ET at Pro Player Stadium. While the Expos were ahead, 2-0, on Brad Wilkerson's two-run homer off Carl Pavano in the third inning, none of the statistics from Sunday will count. The game will be completely replayed. It was a tough day, however, for the Expos, because starter Zach Day suffered a broken bone in his right middle finger while attempting a bunt in the third inning. Pavano's pitch plunked Day on the hand. It wasn't ruled a hit by pitch because Day was bunting. Day will be out four to six weeks. "The wind was blowing hard, and it was getting tough to see out there," said catcher Paul Lo Duca, who was making his first start since being traded to the Marlins from the Dodgers on Friday night. Sunday was the first rainout at Pro Player Stadium since May 27, 2003, a game the Marlins also attempted to play against the Expos. "When it rains, it pours," joked Marlins manager Jack McKeon. "Who said that? Guy Morton -- the guy from Morton Salt." With one out in the top of the fourth inning and a full count on Tony Batista, the game was halted. After waiting one hour, 37 minutes, crew chief Gerry Davis called the game. The threat of rain also caused the game to start 16 minutes late. The Expos went ahead in the third inning on Wilkerson's two-run homer, an opposite-field shot to left-center on a 3-0 pitch. Brian Schneider, who previously doubled, also scored. Because Pavano threw just 43 pitches, there is a chance he could pitch on Thursday at Arizona, instead of his expected spot, on Friday at home against the Brewers. McKeon said the team has yet to decide how to set up the rotation. "We have no control over the weather," McKeon said. "It certainly didn't hurt us." The rainout came as a relief, because the game was nearing the necessary five innings to become official. The Marlins had lost the first two games of the series to the Expos, who were going for the sweep. The Marlins are off on Monday, then they open a three-game series at Arizona on Tuesday. All ticket holders can use their tickets for any 2004 home game, pending ticket availability. In the event the seat is not available, tickets may be exchanged for the next available price level. Rain checks may be exchanged in person at Gate G at the stadium. Tickets may also be exchanged the day of the game at Gates H, F or B. Tickets may also be exchanged at the Marlins en Miami Store.
