August 3, 200421 yr The farm system is very important CapeFish it produced Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis without them this team would not have won a worlds championship last season. I did not note this since the majority of baseball fans do not follow a teams system however Admin Beinfest was able to make all of these upgrades without trading his top prospects. Murphy was a solid young player but he probably was not the top left handed pitcher in the organization. I was impressed that Jason Stokes, Jeremy Hermida, Scott Olsen, Yorman Bazardo and Lincoln Holdzkom all made it past the trading deadline as Marlin property even with all the upgrades. 490779 Welcome, and I know farm teams are important, but our team is young and the farm system at AAA and AA is depleted. The talent is overhyped and has not performed to the level many would like for the most part. Why not trade them, make room for the A and Rookie League guys who are ready to move up? Sometimes you need to clean house and right now AAA could really use a cleaning. I know we have some very good talent down there, but the major league club doesn't have many more holes to fill. So far, the system is in good shape for the future.
August 3, 200421 yr Yeah, I agree. Not to beat the horse to death, but we turned a platoon player (Choi) our fourth starter (Penny) and Nunez into an all-star catcher, the best set up man in baseball, a defensively strong right fielder, a quality righty (Seanez) and a more than effective fifth starter. Anyway, it'll all depend on the results over the next 10 days as to how effective this trade was, but I just get this feeling that Lo Duca is 100% what we need...the kind of leader who hates losing. 490731 i love ur word usage ur "platoon player" is a 25 year old budding star that has a .380 obp and costs the league minimum ur fourth starter is an ace on a couple of teams, and an above average # 2 starter nunez, well, he just sucks 490737 OK, Choi's an overrated (but loveable) rally killer who walks a lot, doesn't get a lot of clutch hits (Philly was huge, but give me one before that) and really killed just about any momentum we had after Lowell and Cabrera got on. Walks are overrated when runners are on base, you can be on base 90% of the time, but unless you score, it really doesn't matter. Choi had quite the following...but he never played against lefties, has artificially inflated numbers because of a monster April, and most importantly struck out way too much for a team built on contact, especially when your job was to protect Lowell/Cabrera. Penny was a tantalizingly good pitcher when the year started, but he's maddeningly inconsistent, has lost 4 mph consistently on his fastball (which is big when you're a power pitcher) and was above average, yes, but think about this let's just say we make the playoffs, we only need four starters, three only really matter so I'll take my chances with Beckett, Burnett, Pavano, and Willis throwing to Lo Duca than Beckett Burnett Pavano and Penny throwing to Redmond. No hate, I wish both of them the best, but we are so much better after the trade it's just sickening that people dislike it. 490807 Same can be said about LoDuca's numbers being inflated with the April he had.

August 3, 200421 yr I love this trade because I am not a big fan of farm systems that are all hype when you have the chance to win now. 490755 That's why I like the Urbina deal. And the Conien deal. And the Valdez deal. And the Seanez deal. But not the LoDuca/Mota deal. Two holes for two bigger holes and bad contracts.
August 3, 200421 yr Lo Duca and Mota are not bad contracts. We possibly could re-sign both for as much as Penny was going to get by himself. Pavano is the better pitcher between he and Penny. Most of you know I am not the biggest Penny fan out there - he doesnt have the heart to put it all together. Pavano is a more complete pitcher and will have better value for this franchise. Besides, when will Penny EVER date a model/actress like Alyssa Milano? :mischief Encarnacion for Choi. That is how you have to look at this part of the deal. Sure, we inherit a big contract that we didnt want to pay for in the first place - but Loria wouldnt ok this deal if they didnt feel they could swing it. Also, Enc makes the team better as his offense is comparable to Choi's but he puts Cabs in the more comfortable LF and Conine goes to 1B. The team defense gets better, not to mention our baserunning and team speed gets A LOT better with Lo Duca and Enc on this team.
August 3, 200421 yr "...The farm system is very important CapeFish it produced Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis without them this team would not have won a worlds championship last season." 490779 It can hardly be said that the Marlins developed Dontrelle Willis, he was really a product of the Chicago Cubs farm system who was traded to the Fish as part of the Clement trade in 2002.
August 3, 200421 yr And necessary in order for that deal to even break even. And considering how we rushed Dtrain, who knows how confident people would be with Beinfest at the helm.
