Does anyone know (for a fact) what Doug Davis' influence is with the Marlins?

I know what a Bench Coach is and is supposed to do. (Like being a great old man who rushes the mound to attack a bean-ball pitcher.)

 

He's the #2. Manager's right hand man. Takes over when Mgr gets tossed.

 

Davis has very good minor league managing credentials. But, he is, IMO, unusually very-low profile. What does he contribute now? What do our players think of him? Is he the guy to step in if Jack suddenly got "sick."

The way I understand it, bench coaches make decisions along with the managers. When Jack gets tossed or has to miss a game for whatever reason, they're supposed to be able to step right in and manage the game....

 

However, I don't think they would show their true managerial style. A bench coach has to know the manager's strategy pretty damn well. I would imagine if Jack was not managing, for whatever reason, Doug would probably manage to Jack's style.

 

There have been a few good managers that were bench coaches... Jerry Manuel, for one....

What is Doug Davis' personal and professional influence on the Marlins' clubhouse, dug-out and Jack's office?

 

In a time of coaching personalities (and my man Ozzie was #1 there) I don't understand why Davis has such a low-profile.

I dont know if Davis is "unusually keeping a low profile"

I agree with Ramp. He is a bench coach - he is not supposed to go beyond McKeon in any fashion.

 

I think Davis' business like demeanor though is what this team may need in the future. We are slowly becoming more of a veteran team that demands and expects to win. McKeon can be a little crusty. Davis is a lot more subtle and to me makes me think of Torre a little bit - but without the credentials, obviously. I like him and I hope he gets his chance here.
