The dog whisperer: WINK-TV announcer

HARBOR HEIGHTS -- Angie and Bill Turner don't known Jim McLaughlin, but they'd like to personally thank the WINK-TV announcer for keeping their dog Rocky so calm during Hurricane Charley.

"We were in the closet. His voice was just so calming -- Rocky kept his nose in the radio (WINK was simulcasting) -- and he stayed totally calm," said Angie.

It was harrowing enough just bracing a piece of plywood up to their living room window against 145 mph which had blown out the glass, so the fact that Rocky stayed calm helped. Fortunately, the Turners had been working out with weights.

That was the first piece of good news. The second came in the form of Angie's parents who arrived in front of their house on Sunday on Highlands Road, pulling a camper, in which all four people and Rocky now reside.

"When I saw that camper, I said, 'there IS a God!'" Angie said.

The divine intervention brought them air-conditioning and a shower all the way from Wapakoneta, Ohio, hometown of Neil Armstrong. It's now parked in the backyard.

"We never experienced or seen anything like that (Charley)," said Turner. "My husband lived in Miami during Andrew, but he wasn't hit by it directly."

The Turner's home has roof damage, a collapsed ceiling and broken window. The worst news, however, was that Bill's business at Charlotte County airport, Aircraft Depot, was totally demolished.

Despite the loss, the Turners remain upbeat.

"My parents are here -- I've got the GREATEST parents -- and they're helping," said Angie. "And there's a wonderful outreach in the community."

Looking around Harbor Heights at all the mass destruction, one wonders how anybody could be so appreciative for such small victories -- especially for things like the voice of the unsuspecting dog whisperer.

I did the same thing with my doggy Cindy. Put her bed in the closet with the radio in there also tuned to WINK. He was able to calm her enough that she even slept a little. Before she couldn't stop moving and I had to hold her in order for her to get comfort.

Awww.... My old dog was terrified of a little thunder storm, I could imagine how she'd get in a hurricane.

Kudos to WINK for keeping you all safe.....and the doggies too. :)

Talked us right through it.

Weirdest thing is this wasn't Cindy's first hurricane (she was with us through Georges and Irene) but Charley's winds, the waterspout, and the waves REALLY scared her and us.
