Posted September 5, 200420 yr I am posting this correction. A couple of days ago someone commented that Don Noe and his cohorts at channel 10 had added a sweep on their "Neighborhood Radar" which is displayed below. WPLG Neighborhood Radar is actually NEXRAD radar that the National Weather Service runs. Well in previous years NEXRAD Level III made it impossible to use a sweep for realtime results from the radar because the old system of delivery delayed the pictures by 6 minutes due to a complex delivery process. Well since then NOAA has launched NEXRAD Level II to the private sector. WXC.com Level II radar data is continuously streamed live from each National Weather Service Radar site. Because it is streamed in real time it can be displayed as soon as it is received. This is an advantage over traditional NWS radar (Level 3) which is collected at the radar site and sent out as a file every six minutes. Now , with StormSentinel DV and Level II radar, you can show your viewers the latest radar image in real-time. In severe weather, a six minute advantage can be critical. So after watching the Local10 radar, looking at the paperwork for this system, and realizing that it is live, I apologize for calling it a fake sweep. Bill Kamal also has access to it, but chooses to not use the sweep. CBS4 and NBC6 have their own radars in addition to NEXRAD.
September 5, 200420 yr Author They released this technology within the last year and since my TV market has 3 out of 4 stations with their own radars and the fourth uses NEXRAD loops, I hadn't found out about this. This is a real acheivement for the NWS.
September 5, 200420 yr For those of us who are weather challenged, please post the links for the radar loops that you are posting. I'm getting frustrated trying to find what you're looking at. Thanks!
September 5, 200420 yr i would also have to apologize because i also criticized them for the supposed "fake sweep" many times.
September 5, 200420 yr Author any word if people like us could use the new live system? 543596 Yes, but no software that is easy enough for us mortals to use or afford even has been written yet.

September 6, 200420 yr i must admit when the sweep goes over a target, it looks like it never had any movement, that's why i thought the sweeps were fake. it's not like first alert dopper 6 does the sweep does over a target you notice movement.

It is still experimental for broadcast use though. It is described as similar to a stream of information.

First alert doppler 6 and the CBS 4 radar you notice movememnt or change in cells when the sweep would go over.

WFOR also uses NEXRAD Level II technology (same software as 10 and 7) along with it's Realtime Radar and hence has the same sweeps as 10 and they update.
September 6, 200420 yr Author BTW, WFOR calls its radar at the station Realtime Radar and calls the NEXRAD Level II radars (NWS Radars) Realtime Doppler.
September 6, 200420 yr BTW, WFOR calls its radar at the station Realtime Radar and calls the NEXRAD Level II radars (NWS Radars) Realtime Doppler. 544253 i was gonna say Chnl 4's Realtime doppler does the same things as channel 10's. realtime radar you notice movement and change in the cell. BTW: i just saw a 5 sec clip of roger dean, one of the light towers in on the street.
September 6, 200420 yr Author Feb. 2003 was when the NWS said it would collect and distribute Level II data and over 100 sites are streaming, others should be soon. My guess is since the new technology just got to 10, 7, and 4 (only 10 and 4 decided to use the sweep though) and that NWS Miami radar was not working...the sweep was fake, but the system works if the normal radar was working.
September 6, 200420 yr Author I noticed change in the Level II feeds from Melbourne and Key West during Charley here on NBC2/ABC7 which have Level II built into their Baron doppler system.
September 6, 200420 yr Author NEXRAD Level II Feed Monitor Looks like all in Florida except Tampa are up right now. Of course that does change.
