Longest high school football winning streak ends

SEATTLE, Wash. - The Bellevue, Wash., Wolverines, three-time state champions, defeated De La Salle of Concord, Calif. 39-20 Saturday night, ending the Spartans' nation's longest high school winning streak at 151 games.

 

It was the first loss for De La Salle since Dec. 7, 1991 -- when the current seniors on the team were in kindergarten. Since then, there have been 12 undefeated seasons under coach Bob Ladouceur, who is now 287-14-2 for his career.

However, De La Salle graduated 17 starters from the 13-0 squad from 2003, which was one of the best team's in the school's history. And the Wolverines dominated as they launched their season in Qwest Field in Seattle, home to the Seattle Seahawks.

 

Playing for the Wolverines was running back J.R. Hasty, the son of James Hasty -- a Bellevue coach who played for the New York Jets, Kansas City Chiefs and Oakland Raiders. The son rushed for 1,955 yards and 26 touchdowns a year ago.

 

Bellevue's head coach Butch Goncharoff took over the program five years ago, and is the first coach in Washington history to win three straight large-school state titles.

 

De La Salle also suffered off-the-field heartache recently. On Aug. 12, linebacker Terrence Kelly shot to death in Richmond, a crime-ridden city 20 miles east of De La Salle's campus, just before he was to leave for the University of Oregon, where he had earned a full football scholarship.

 

 

what makes it even more ironic, they had just appeared in SI a few weeks ago.

I read that article and thought about them losing. The SI curse has expanded beyond the cover I guess.

Oh yeah, I forgot that kid was killed over the summer that went there.

plus they only have 6 returning starters

i DONT GET HOW A TEAM THAT CANT RECRUIT CAN BE SO DOMINATE FOR SO LONG.

High schools can recruit. Students transfer from school to school all the time (went to 3 public schools in 4 years, and not one was my home school). The two biggest high programs in my area have been stealing eachother's JV stars for years.

In San Francisco, the Public School teams SUCK because all the best players either go to private schools or play somewhere in the East Bay

i went to 4 high schools in 4 yrs and to 2 middle schools in 3 yrs (8th grade i transfered to private school to play jv high school baseball

My HS bball team has the record for longest L streak . :plain

They were able to recurit anyway, because they are a private school.
