Acting yourself is fine, if you're an interesting, confident person. If you're naturally boring, weird, or uncomfortable around women, then telling someone to act themselves is a waste of time. In that case, they might as well put on a show, and crash and burn for a while. If they do it long enough, eventually, that's who they'll become, and it will no longer be a show.
