MIRAMAR, Fla. -- September 6, 2004 -? When it was clear that Hurricane Frances posed an imminent threat to South Florida, more viewers chose Telemundo 51/WSCV as their source for information than any other television station in South Florida, English or Spanish language. At 11pm on Friday, Telemundo 51 handily beat all local television stations, including doubling the ratings for Univision?s WLTV. This trend had held throughout the day. Telemundo 51 was #1 sign-on to sign-off with an 8.2 rating and a 13.7 share. *

Telemundo 51 was a touchstone for South Florida residents as Hurricane Frances approached and later pummeled our state?s east coast over the Labor Day weekend. Led by Ambrosio Hernandez, Maria Montoya, Chief Meteorologist John Morales and Meteorologist Felipe Ferro, Telemundo 51 reassured the community by providing 24-hour coverage of the storm?s excruciatingly slow progress, and by carefully outlining the steps that residents should take in order to prepare for a possible direct hit. Telemundo 51?s continuing coverage was watched by Floridians as far south as the keys and as far north as Palm Beach County.

Along with sister-station NBC 6, Telemundo 51 also provided a hurricane helpline for viewers to call. The questions received ran the gamut from where to find supplies and where individuals should evacuate, to what residents should do if unable to leave their homes. Many of the phone bank staff found themselves trying to sooth the frayed nerves of people who had never experienced this level of storm. And there were times that members of the community gave back, offering to assist others in the installation of hurricane shutters, asking to be reimbursed only for the cost of gasoline to travel to their homes.

This shows a big shift in Miami's TV habits and shows a big response to NBC6's merger with T51.

I was one of those who watched Telemundo and from the little I saw while surfing channels, theyr coverage was the best.

Is that because there are a dozen English channels to choose from?

i'm sure that has something to do with it, that and the huge latin population

Me too. Best coverage of any channel (English or Spanish). John Morales is the best.

If only I could understand it..I'm sure it's due to the limited channels (as someone said) in comparision to the english channels and large spanish population.

there's 4 local spanish channels.

there isn't anything particularly surprising about this...telemundo's news beats every other station in this market every week.

actually, ratings have shown Univision 23 as the leader for a long time. This shows that Telemundo is gaining.

That trend has been over the past year, I mean historically. Pre-NBC Telemundo merger.

In the TV business 2 years is short for advertisers in newscasts. News viewerships don't change as quickly as other shows.

i forgot to count telefutura, then there's 5 local stations. 4 of them covered the hurricanes.

univision

telemundo

tv miami

and canal 22

I agree 100%. 3 years ago I didn't even care about T51. But their quality have gone up tremendously, and I now watch T51 90% of the time I watch spanish tv.
