October 3, 200422 yr Well, since the A's had made the playoffs 6 straight years before this, I'd say 7. Beinfest was the GM of the Marlins how long before they won a WS?
October 3, 200422 yr Um, Beinfest is part of the sabermetric crowd. 579901 not sure if I buy that and if he is, he still likes to see what players do on the field..... not just stats alone
October 3, 200422 yr Author So, um, how many Moneyball teams have won a Series? 579874 Money ball is not meant to win the series... but that is assuming you read MoneyBall.... which is assuming you can read..... which assumes you can string letters and words together, let alone coherent thoughts.... which may be assuming to much. :mischief

The nucleus of the 03 team was Dave's doing, and look, the Tigers have taken strides since he got up there.

Moneyball is meant to put a winning team on the field, yes. But isn't a GM's job to win the World Series? The Marlins just play in the wrong league and stadium to use the fat patient slugger approach.
October 3, 200422 yr Guys, juanky is just so anti-moneyball hes blinded. Good points marlinfan and passion.
October 3, 200422 yr Juanky you have to accept the fact that winning the series involves a lot of luck and usually the best team doesnt win. SABR can only give you the best bang for your buck in a world where only a handful of teams can afford to be careless with payroll. Your an ultra-capitalist...why don't you love the efficiency of SABR?

OPS is a solid way to classify power hitters. However I despise the fact that's so overrated when only four teams use it (unless I'm missing someone), and none of them have won a pennant. Yes, not in much time, but still you can't consider a sports system successful until it at least wins a title of some sort. I think a Moneyball team will win the World Series this year (Boston) but we'll see. I also have disagreements on the finer points. First of all, it completely discounts my preferred style of playing ball, small ball. The importance of a leadoff hitter is not taken into account, along with a huge hole in the theory behind the bullpen (Billy's learned this the hard way). Some other stuff too. In fact, I don't really hate the system as much as I hate the blind disciples (not you Shammy). People that take the philosophy and twist it to be a blanket tossed over everyone, like saying Juan Pierre sucks because his OPS isn't 3 times as great as the amount of pairs of shoes he uses during the season. Garbage. Not everything is based on numbers.
