JP plays every single inning of every single game

PHILADELPHIA -- Add Juan Pierre to a small fraternity that includes Cal Ripken Jr. and Travis Fryman.

The Marlins' speedy center fielder is the only player in the Major Leagues to log every inning of every game.

According to STATS Inc.'s research department, only three players have done it since 1991.

Ripken did it with the Orioles from 1983-86. Fryman did it in Detroit in 1995. Now Pierre in 2004.

"To play every inning says I was healthy," Pierre said. "That's the main thing."

Knowing how much pride he has in playing, the Marlins pulled a prank on Pierre on Sunday afternoon.

A mock lineup card was made that had Chris Aguila penciled in at leadoff and Pierre getting the day off.

Several teammates brought it to Pierre's attention, before he caught on.

Even manager Jack McKeon got in on the act. McKeon walked up to Pierre's locker and said, "Take the day off."

Smiling, Pierre said, "You're going to be playing with 10 guys out there, Skip."

Pierre is leading the National League in hits.

"It's the most I've ever had," said Pierre, who extended his hitting streak 12 games with a single in the first inning Sunday. "I've been hitting pretty good for the last couple of months. It's a pretty high hit total when you think of all the guys who've never got that high."

Pierre's single in the first inning Sunday increased his total to 221. The only player with more is Ichiro Suzuki, who broke George Sisler's single-season record.

"The only thing overshadowing me is Ichiro," Pierre said. "You think, 'Wow, he's got 40 more hits than me.'

"That's definitely a lot of hits. I made good contact and found some holes this year. It's hard to really think about it now, especially when you see the guys celebrating and making it to the postseason, it's a very disappointing year, from the team aspect. The club we have we should have won a lot more games, at least in the 90s in games. It didn't happen that way."

He missed 12 innings.

Ice Williams started in his place 1 game, and Williams and Chad Allen came in as defense replacements once each.

He played every game last year but not every inning. This is only the third time since 1991 that a player has acheived this feat.

He certainly earned his paycheck.
