Exactly. Bullpen pitchers are too hard to project from year to year. One year they're lights out, the next they are getting shelled every other outing. You never know what you're going to get with 'pen pitcher so you shouldn't go out and spend huge money on them.

Did it? GA was hurt alot this year, Glaus missed most of the year, they played most of the year starting at least two rookies every game. Guillen and Vlad were the only steadies on that team. If this team hits with RISP they have the talent there to put up big numbers. Now they just need to hit with RISP. Cabs can do better than his RBI total next year, Mikey should do better, Dukie will hit behind Juanpy and Luiy a full year, etc.

Instead of spending all that money on Ricky Bottalico and Chad Bradford, You spend that one a SP. Remeber Chad Fox is also coming back.

I'm sorry, but good luck getting a stadium if they cut payroll. Not raising the payroll is a gunshot to the temple of this franchise.

The fact is the Angels were in the top 10 in the majors in most offensive categories, and we were in the bottom 10 of pretty much all offensive categories.

 

Also, our lineup was terrible with Lo Duca in the 3rd slot. The guy has little power at all, and doesn't get on base at anything more than an average rate. He's your prototypical #2 hitter.

Alot can be done about that lineup. You can go get Jose Guillen and have Jack straighten him out while saving money in the process. You could sign one of the dime a dozen bats on the open market if you could deal someone. Hell, see if Niner retires, keep him around as one of the replacement coaches and go get a solid first baseman or left fielder (Lowell to first Miggy to third).

I don't think so. I'm pretty sure when the season started our payroll was at 56 million and that was including Pudge and Hampton's contracts.

You're right. 48M was the magic number last offseason.

Well, we could dream of a payroll of 65 million (damn that seems mighty silly, to dream of being a higher end small market team), but in all reality we might not have to dream much. Pavano will probably leave, they either resign everyone else or take a chance on a big name free agent who needs to prove themselves (Maggs maybe?) or they won't get a stadium.
