If we lose Beni as most of us are predicting, what's to keep us doing a closer by committee. We have at least 3 players that can take the role, at least part time, but all three have had battles with inconsitency. Koch of course depends on him being resigned, and Spooney on his injury recovery. Regardless, it could work. What do you think?

Second, I can't think of a single working closer by committee example. Biggest failure was Boston last year, but teams that try this fail. You close by committee when you don't have a closer, you don't do it just cuz.

not gonna happen...Koch c'mon man the guy is not a closer anymore plus why did he leave the team this year...spooney is coming back from surgery and he's not a closer either...Must get benitez back cause Mota cant close either...

I don't think Koch is a free agent. He's arbitration eligible, I believe.... And he left the team for personal reasons.... Had some family issues, so cut the guy some slack.

 

Closer by committee just doens't work for some reason. The Red Sox tried that last year and look at what happened to them. It takes a special person to come into the 9th inning and close the door. Not everyone has what it takes. In the past, a lot of good relief pitchers have not exceled closing. For some reason, they just don't have the mentality.

Won't work. Pitchers complain about their roles all the time. Managers try to avoid criticism by placing their players in roles.

 

Best you could hope for is a Wetteland/Rivera, Myers/Benitez, Percival/KRod situation. An excellent setup man to put out the flames before a fading (atleast in Percival's case) closer comes in.
