Damn. I hope our current offer to Pavs means something. I would have to see him as a Yank. What the Marlins offered is more than enough to live with.

Reading between the lines, Carl wants to put himself in a winning situation for the next 4-5 years, and would love to sign with a team where he could have a mentor.

 

The Marlins' proposed 4 yr$32M contract is a solid offer, but my gut feeling is that if a team like the Red Sox offers similar money, he's gone.

 

With the Marlins, he's the main veteran guy on that staff. On a team like the Red Sox, he has a guy like Schilling (and possibly Pedro) that could serve as mentors. Add to the fact both team's financial situations, and the writing could be on the wall.

 

Listening to his agent, he didn't seem too confident that the Marlins will be in a position to win for the long term.

 

Again, this is all speculation and the way I see the situation. But all things considered, I see him opting for the Sox or Yankees, simply because of that tangible factor that both teams provide.

I agree. Also, add to that, the fact that they keep saying how he wants to play for a team that is going to give him a lot of run support. I think he's leaning heavily on signing with the Red Sox.

Yeah, it is alot like college recruiting. The kids always say what sounds good for that school.

 

Pavano said all the right things regarding coming back to the marlins and the right things about going to the red sox (mentor). Wait to you hear what he has to say about the yankees.

This Shapiro guy is really taking a page from the Scott Boras book on negotiating. My gut feeling is that Pavano goes unsigned until at least the New Year...hopefully, that doesn't handcuff what the Marlins want to do.

 

If that 4/$32 offer is true, it better be off the table by Thanksgiving if he doesn't accept it.

 

The Marlins are commendable in coming out aggressively on Pavano (who they pegged as their top FA priority), but that doesn't mean they need to wait around while Pavano diddles around.
