My article on how Marlins reach out to hispanics..

Featured Replies

Is your point that Marlins would like to PWN the latin demographic and start a huge yankee-like bandwagon following in latin america? Will we be seeing the latin rappers throwing out their yankee caps and buying marlins caps? :p

Kind of...the Marlins have to start at home first though...this is just the start of my theory.

not a bad strategy. the latin american market is wide open. even the cuban american demographic is open to the marlins.

thanks for the correction my friend. i was debating between the two.

Thanks CapeFish. You certainly have your finger on the MLB pulse!

Very interesting to me.

But, since inception, the Marlins have really tried to entice the local Hispanic (incl. Cuban) baseball fans. I think, with no stats to back me up, that ethnic community has not responded well or, at least, not according to predictions.

Perhaps the location of the new Stadium will help.

I really wonder...

I wish. Im so over all these rappers with yankee hats. About the hispanic dominance thing, we are in South Florida. And alot of the players are from hispanic origin. :p

The Marlins are doing better...

1) Because they are winning

2) Loria and Samson are doing things in the Hispanic Community in both Florida and Latin America

3) Hispanic Population in Dade County is now majority and most like/love baseball.

I think the Marlins are doing a great job of marketing themselves in Latin America, but they could do better. I think Miguel Cabrera, if he continues to put up monster numbers, can really do a lot of great things for the organization in Venezuela and other Latin American countries. From what I understand, Venezuelans love him and the Marlins are already the most popular team there. If the Marlins can turn Miguelito into a Sammy Sosa type icon in Latin America, they can become the most popular team in that region. And this would be easier for the Marlins to do than any other team in baseball because they are located in what is, arguably, Latin America's most important city, Miami.

I agree, but MLB has held up progress in letting the team establish deals for TV rights and radio rights. The team is opening academies quietly and putting lots of products down there so people can buy them. I hope the Marlins start putting more products throughout Florida though.

3 largest groups of Cuban-Americans:

1) Florida (Mainly around Miami)

2) New York (Mainly around the City)

3) Chicago

I fear we are getting into a dizzy zone... It's good MLB and the Marlins are cultivating Central and South America.

But, bottom-line is Miami Hispanics have not supported the ticket sales for Marlins games. We have catered to them from the beginning. So many Hispanic players added (like Livan Hernandez) that were supposed to generate Miami-area Cuban and Hispanic baseball fans.

What crap. It never happened.

It takes years to build a fan base. See: Seattle, Anaheim, and Atlanta.

MLB is against the Marlins expanding in Latin America.

I'm sure the Marlins would love to sell cheap Marlins gear in northern Colombia, Venezuela and the Domincan Republic. They'd also want to televise the games on public television to expand their fanbase, and make the future hispanic superstars dream of wearing teal.

But then MLB would basically give the Marlins a headstart in signing young players in those countries, which won't benefit the other owners.

I know, but the Marlins continue to fight. I think the Marlins should consider broadcasting games via WRMI Shortwave so that anyone from Alaska to Tierra Del Fuego with a shortwave radio (something very common in South America and cheaply gotten anywhere in the world) can listen to the games. I know Radio Mart? broadcasts some games in Spanish, AFN Radio does many Marlins games in English, and that MLB is fighting to have the contracts in each country with MLB International and not allow teams to sign contracts, but DirecTV Latin America carries MLB games in an package similar to MLB Extra Innings and the Marlins are one of the few who have plenty of games on with either FSN's SAP feed or WQBA audio with FSN video on it.

I know people in Cuba have illegal dishes to get ESPN Latin America (aka Deportes), TV Mart?, shortwave radios to get Radio Mart?, and they try to overcome Castro's jamming to get WQBA. The team is popular in Cuba.

The 2003 World Series proved this once again like in 1997.

They way it was explained to me is that MLB International signs the radio and TV deal for a country, then the rights holder chooses the games it wishes to air.

In Venezuela: Televen, ESPN, and Fox Sports Latin America hold TV rights while Union Radio holds all radio rights, the main sponsor is Polar Beer.

They choose to air alot of Marlins games.
