McDonough let go

NESN made it official yesterday, telling Sean McDonough that he would not be renewed to call Friday night Red Sox games this season, according to industry sources.

McDonough, who has gradually seen his Sox work lessen over the last few years, has broadcast Sox games for 17 seasons. He most recently had handled a reduced load, specifically NESN-produced games that aired on UPN 38 and CBS 4.

NESN's Don Orsillo is expected to handle the play-by-play for all locally produced broadcasts in 2005. NESN announced on Friday that Orsillo and studio host Tom Caron had their contracts extended. Orsillo has been the Sox play-by-play announcer since the 2001 season.

No way I heard a couple of his calls last year and they bombed.

I agree, he's awful.

There is a reason NESN didn't want him back.

I listened to him for years and years and I always thought he was fine. In a Curt Gowdy way. We could do worse than a year of Sean while we wait on Al Leiter.

His father was one of the great sports writers of all time.

I thought Leiter was going to be an analyst and not a color man.
