December 17, 200421 yr GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida forward Mohamed Abukar has decided to transfer because of limited playing time through the first seven games of the season. A top recruit from San Diego, Abukar will be the fifth scholarship player to leave the program since October 2003 and the seventh since the end of the 2002 season. "When a guy leaves a program, generally it is based on one thing -- playing time," Gators coach Billy Donovan said. "That's what it always comes down to. Mohamed wanted to play more consistently than he was playing." Abukar originally signed with Georgia but never played there, transferring to Florida without penalty after coach Jim Harrick was fired. He averaged five points and 10.3 minutes in seven games this season, scoring 22 of his 35 points in one game. He had averaged 2.7 points and 13.4 minutes as a freshman. With the exception of Danish forward Christian Drejer, who quit in February to sign a pro contract in Spain, all of the Florida players who transferred in the last two seasons were little-used backups. Center Mario Boggan resurfaced at Chipola Junior College while point guard Ryan Appleby transferred to Washington, where he will become eligible next fall. Guard Rashid Al-Kaleem has transferred to American International College, a Division II school in Springfield, Mass. Two high-profile players also left after Florida's first-round loss to Creighton in the 2002 NCAA Tournament. Guard Orien Greene, a Gainesville native, transferred to Louisiana-Lafayette while swingman James White, a McDonald's All-American, moved to Cincinnati last fall.
