When we traded him, we got 3 minor leaguers in return. Does anyone remember who they were and if they ever materialized into anything?

Looper, Almanza and Pablo Ozuna

We all know the motive was to dump salary....not gain young talent.

I mean, if Ozuna doesnt age overnight, it might not have been such a bad trade

yeah Ozuna was looking like a real good prospect there for a while

Almanza and Looper both had live arms.

Looper turned out alright I'd say.

Almanza and Ozuna were busts. Looper is an average closer.

All in all, we would be much better off with Renteria.

no argument here, but the fact that Ozuna wasnt as young as previously thought really ruined the trade

why was Almanza a bust?... He was never that great in the minors to begin with

Fair enough.

Might have been sufficient to say he never amounted to much. An average reliever who at age 32 can only get a minor league deal with the Giants.

Think about it from another point of view. If we didn't trade Renteria we wouldn't have Alex (alias "sea bass") who hit the game-winning HR in the 4th game of the 2003 WS in extra innings. Yes, Renteria hit the game winning single in the 1997 WS also in extra innings, but he also hit the last out of the 2004 WS against Boston. Things have a way of working out at the end... And Renteria would have been too expensive in the long run.
