February 26, 200521 yr Panthers avert paying $10 million bonus, release Muhammad CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) - Muhsin Muhammad earned a Pro Bowl selection this season with the Carolina Panthers. That still wasn't enough for them to pick up his $10 million roster bonus due by March 1. After failing to work out a contract extension that would have lessened the bonus, the Panthers waived Muhammad, the franchise's all-time leading receiver. "The efforts to get a contract extension on Muhsin were unsuccessful, and we have decided to release him," Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said. "Muhsin has been a valuable member of our team, and we appreciate everything he has done for the Panthers." While most of his teammates, including fellow receiver Steve Smith and running back Stephen Davis went down with injuries in 2004, Muhammad caught 93 passes for a career-high 1,405 yards and 16 touchdowns. Muhammad, 31, spent his first nine seasons with Carolina and caught 578 passes for 7,751 yards and 44 touchdowns. He set a career-high with 102 receptions in 2002. The 6-2 Muhammad becomes one of the most coveted receivers in the free agent market, joining Derrick Mason, who had 96 receptions last season, and Plaxico Burress. Link How stupid. Any ideas of where he'll end up. I would think Philly would go after him. :mischief2
February 26, 200521 yr Bears should go after him.. He's a highly respected vet. Muhammad would be a good mentor to Braylon or Williams.
February 26, 200521 yr Yeah, but he'd also be a good mentor to Chambers and Booker (maybe even Boston and McMichael).
February 26, 200521 yr Yes because pro bowl 7 year vets need mentors. Wide receiver isn't a problem for Miami.
February 26, 200521 yr Why do players and agents keep putting these massive roster bonuses in their contracts? It's like..."hey, cut me!!!" As awesome as he was during the second half of last season, there aren't more than 10 or so players in this league who you'd hold on to for that kind of money.
February 26, 200521 yr Moose had some pro bowl type seasons a couple years ago and then wasn't healthy for a couple years and is now back to putting up solid numbers. He's a very good receiver.
February 26, 200521 yr Author Well, it looks like he's going to sign with the Bears. http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/3422946
