Leiters first start

Featured Replies

I don't have an article, but in the postgame show on 850, Roxy said that the Braves have adjusted their rotation and instead of Tim Hudson pitching vs. Leiter tomorrow, he'll be pitching Thursday vs. AJ and Mike Hampton will be pitching tomorrow vs. Leiter.

Leiter's first start: From a statistical standpoint, Al Leiter endured a discouraging Spring Training.

On Wednesday, Leiter gets his first start of his second stint with the Marlins. The 39-year-old, who spent the past seven years with the Mets, says he hasn't been able to gain that similar intensity level in the spring that he has shown in the regular season.

"It's different. I need to pitch with the nervousness and the energy that comes with being on edge," Leiter said. "There is a certain anger that I need to have. There is an edgy thing that keeps you uneasy. That's good for me because it reminds me of the importance of every pitch. It seems, as the years have gone on, that in Spring Training, I haven't had that. This isn't the only spring that I've given up a lot of runs."

A lifelong baseball fan, Leiter attended his first baseball game in person on Opening Day in 1970. The Toms River, N.J., native attended the opener at Shea Stadium and saw the Mets lose to the Pirates. New York starter Jerry Koosman suffered the loss.

On that day, the Mets were raising their 1969 World Series title banner.
