KNOXVILLE, Tenn. ? Quarterback Brent Schaeffer is leaving Tennessee after being suspended from the team this month following his arrest.

Schaeffer, a former Sun-Sentinel Player of the Year at Deerfield Beach who would have been a sophomore this fall, will leave school at the end of the spring semester. He had been charged with misdemeanor assault stemming from a dormitory fight.

Coach Phillip Fulmer said Friday the decision was a "mutual agreement" in "everyone's best interest." Schaeffer's family declined to comment and the player could not immediately be reached.

Schaeffer and fellow freshman Erik Ainge vied for the starting job last year but both were injured and didn't finish the season. Schaeffer broke his collarbone in a game at South Carolina in October.

Schaeffer and receiver Bret Smith were arrested April 10. Part of Schaeffer's involvement was caught on tape by a video camera in the dorm lobby. A police report said Schaeffer picked up Quantavios Emerson, who had been arguing with Schaeffer's girlfriend about a cell phone, and threw him to the floor. Smith is accused of hitting Emerson while he was down.

F**k the Toothless Wonders!!

That won't hurt the Vols too much, Ainge looks to be their QB for the years to come, and Claussen proved he can be a solid backup over the next few years.

How is Jonathan Mapu doing down there in Tennessee?

hey brent, come to carolina! youll fit in well with the criminals on the team

i think he'll head to NCSU.

A criminal from south Florida? Sounds like a match made in Heaven for the Canes.

So sad but so true, Schaeffer was a great ballplayer I saw him play a couple of games while he was in High School. Hopefully he'll end up at a place where he can get his life together and rebound from this.
