MIAMI -- After seeing one Marlins' star limping around, manager Jack McKeon wasn't about to take any chances with another.

Miguel Cabrera pulled up slightly after reaching on an infield single in the eighth inning in Tuesday night's 6-2 win over the Astros. Initially, Cabrera remained in the game, and went to third on Paul Lo Duca's double. But with the game tied at 2, Chris Aguila pinch-ran for Cabrera.

McKeon wanted a faster runner on third in case Mike Lowell hit a sacrifice fly. The point ended up being moot as Lowell collected a two-run double and the Marlins scored five runs in the inning.

With a scheduled off-day on Thursday, Cabrera was given Wednesday off.

The Marlins are without two-time All-Star second baseman Luis Castillo until Monday at least.

"We can't afford to be without Cabrera and Castillo," McKeon said.

An All-Star last season, the 22-year-old Cabrera says he is fine.

McKeon often will give a regular a breather the day before a scheduled day off, which basically gives them a two-day break.

"When I saw that [pull up at first base], he had a little tweak," McKeon said. "I'm not going to mess with it. Take a day. That gives him two days. He's ready to pinch-hit."

Castillo remains out, but the two-time Gold Glove winner is feeling better from the left quadriceps strain he suffered on Monday.

Castillo was examined by the doctor and says he should be ready Monday in Los Angeles.

"It's going to be up to him," McKeon said. "He feels much better today, that's a good sign. I joked with him and said, 'You going to be ready by next month?' He said, 'Next month?' He's in a good frame of mind, he will be OK."

Jack said that he gave him the night off tonight just to be safe and make sure he doesn't really get injured. He wanted to give him 2 days off just to make sure he's ok and ready to go.

He's not really injured, there's nothing to worry about.

He'll technically have two days off since tomorrow is an offday. Hopefully Luis will be back soon, but with the way Easley has been playing, Luis can certainly take all the time he needs.

Don't get ahead of yourself. Easley isn't playing AWESOME, but he's play good. And not as good as Castillo. Don't let that 2 run homer to dead center confuse you...he came into the game hitting .200 in 45 AB's...that'll go up, but still, Easley has not reached Castillo's level, and when Castillo's fully healed, Easley's gonna get taken out of the lineup.

Wait, so you're saying our injured starting second basemen will be the starter once he's healthy and the backup second basemen will be back on the bench when the starter is healthy? Thank you for your thorough and thoughtful insight.

No...you don't have to misconstrue all of my posts ya know...

I was talking about when Accord said "but with the way Easley has been playing, Luis can certainly take all the time he needs"-Easley hasn't been playing good enough for Castillo to take his sweet old time healing...we need him back.

Castillo said he'd be ready for Monday's game.

That's why Easley is the backup to Castillo, because Easley isn't as good as Castillo, but I sure am happy that we have Easley as a backup, because he's definitely good.
