Posted May 29, 200519 yr Matt Herges was placed on waivers by the Giants Should the Marlins make run at Matt Herges? Danny Graves? or nobody?
May 29, 200519 yr Herges had an ERA of 2.12 until he blew up in one game last week. (From ESPN: " Herges was 1-1 with a 4.71 ERA in 21 appearances this season. He allowed four runs and five hits in Friday's 9-3 loss to the San Diego Padres, but had a 2.12 ERA in 19 outings from April 7 to Thursday.") I can pretend I know enough about the guy to make an educated comment but in truth I can't. His stats look reasonably good, he's owed about $1 million for the rest of the season and the Giants have said they'll pick up some of that (although in theory they may have to pick up all of it), he has closer experience but is old enough (ala Todd Jones) that his ego doesn't demand he fill that role, he fits the Marlins current modus operandi of flooding the pen with guys who pitch first and throw second, in other words he's mature... If Admin B. pulls the trigger on a deal, so be it. Herges, Graves, fillintheblank. I'd be surprised if he wasn't discussed. Along with others. I do think Nate Bump will be gone by the trading deadline.
May 29, 200519 yr Again, based in large measure on Fantasy teams interest last year, I am very much in favor of both Herges and Graves (with the selling teams picking up the lions-share of what's owed) They have both been really productive and I think they can be again. Two Closers looking for an open door to contribute in any way. They were both very good. Just need some Florida sun and Marlins attitude now. The Todd Jones Remedy. Helluva lot more potential than Riedling and Bump. And they'll take the pressure off our good minors pitchers who get crushed by our frequent-flyer insanity.
May 29, 200519 yr Matt Herges blows. Believe me, I've witnessed his suckiness first hand. With the bunch of righties who only go 1-2 innings you guys already have (Jones, Mota, Alf, Mecir, eventually Spooney) you don't need him.
May 29, 200519 yr We've given chances to guys like Fox, Koch and Todd Jones. I don't see why we'd shy away from Danny Graves.

He was, for quite a while, a solid Closer for the Giants. They are in San Francisco.

May 30, 200519 yr Since you asked...two things. One, Jack has given him enough chances to succeed in important, pressure-filled situations, and to say he's been inconsistent in those situations would be charitable. I suspect Jack no longer has the confidence in him he had in mid-2003. Second, Bump hasn't improved markedly in the last two and a half seasons. He's more or less the same pitcher we saw acouple of years ago, there's no improvement. As others get better (in the organization and on the team), or better alternatives become available his importance lessens. So, no disrespect to Bump, I do expect he won't survive the mid-season trading deadline, his roster spot being filled by a more capable player.

I think your crazy. If Jack didn't have any faith in him, he'd already be gone. By the way...he's only had 2 walks to 12 strikeouts this year. If that's not an improvement, I don't know what is! That's what Jack's beef was with Bump. The walks. Also, do you know how many inherited runners he's allowed so far? I just looked it up. ONE. I think that's an improvement too.
May 30, 200519 yr You asked me a question and I answered it. Obviously you didn't agree with my conclusion and that's okay, but to insult me and resort to name-calling is unnecessary. We'll see after the trade deadlines who was wrong. If Bump remains it will be because he pitched well enough to stay with the team, and that would please me. I'm not a Bump hater, I have no axe to grind against him. But that said I stand by what I said, that he won't survive another season with the Marlins.
