(Elsa/Getty Images) ST. LOUIS -- The Cardinals announced on Monday that right-handed reliever Al Reyes has a torn medial collateral ligament in his right elbow and will need to undergo reconstructive surgery. Reyes is out for the entire postseason and will likely be unable to pitch for close to 12 months. Reyes, 35, enjoyed a career year in 2005, his first full Major League season since 1999. He was a vital piece of the St. Louis bullpen, appearing in 65 games with a 2.15 ERA over 62 2/3 innings. He struck out 67 batters, walking just 20, and tallied a 4-2 record with three saves and 15 holds. "It's really horrible luck for him," said Cardinals head athletic trainer Barry Weinberg. "He's done so well and he's worked so hard." La Russa declined to name the pitcher who will take Reyes' roster spot for the National League Division Series starting Tuesday. However, it's likely that Reyes' absence means that both Cal Eldred and Brad Thompson will be on the roster, whereas one of them probably would have been left off if Reyes had been healthy. October 3, 200521 yr Author Reyes out for year with torn ligament in his right elbow ST. LOUIS (AP) -- St. Louis Cardinals reliever Al Reyes tore a ligament in his right elbow in the regular-season finale and will require reconstructive surgery, forcing him to miss the playoffs. Reyes, who was 4-2 with a 2.15 ERA in 65 games with three saves, was the team's top middle reliever. He struck out the side with the bases loaded to get the win on Friday. Trainer Barry Weinberg said Monday that Reyes had not reported any problems with the elbow before the injury in the sixth inning Sunday against the Reds, and he left the game with a 3-2 count on Felipe Lopez. An exam on Monday morning confirmed the team's suspicions, Weinberg said. ``It was a one-pitch episode,'' Weinberg said. ``He felt some discomfort and knew it wasn't right.'' The 35-year-old Reyes had reconstructive surgery on the elbow in 1995. The injury is expected to sideline him for a year. ``It's bad luck,'' Weinberg said. ``It's horrible luck for him.''
