Leaning in a different direction

Jack McKeon came to the Florida Marlins in 2003 layered in decades of major-league experience, both on the field and off. But as they begin their search for his replacement, the Marlins appear to be looking for a new breed of manager. Not one of the three confirmed candidates for the position -- Ron Washington, Joe Girardi and Fredi Gonzalez -- has managed in the majors. But none is lean on credentials, and all come highly praised.

''I've got passion for the game of baseball, and I've always had passion for the game of baseball,'' Washington said. ``I think I know as much about baseball as anyone. I want this job, so I'm going to give it my best shot. I just hope I knock their socks off.''

Ron Washington? Can someone give me a quick lowdown on the guy?

Career .260 hitter. He could play almost any position but he was a shortstop.

what is his history at the coaching level? I never heard about this guy.
