Bio:Coach/Manager: Is in his 11th season as the Rangers hitting instructor since appointment on October 26, 1994...2004 recipient of the Joe Macko Award which was instituted in 2001 to honor long and meritorious service by a member of the Texas Rangers baseball operations department...first individual in team history to serve more than 8 years on the major league coaching staff...also has longest tenure with one team of any major league hitting coach...served as the hitting coach for Major League All-Star Team that went 5-3 on tour of Japan in November, 2002...in 2004, his hitters ranked 3rd in the American League with 227 home runs, 4th highest in the majors...the club placed 3rd in the majors in total bases (2564) and 4th in the AL in slugging (.457)...the team was 4th in the league in doubles (323), 7 shy of matching the club record, and 4th in runs scored (860), its 9th consecutive season with 800 or more runs...in 2003, the Rangers led the majors in home runs for the third consecutive season (239)...Texas led the AL in batting in 1998 (.289) and 1999 (.293) and was second in the majors in runs scored both years...spent 1994 managing Colorados Bend farm club in the Northwest League...the hitting instructor on Art Howes staff at Houston from 1990-93...with the Rangers minor league organization from 1983-89...a coach for Sarasota in Gulf Coast League in 1983, then managed at Burlington in Midwest League in 1984 and at Sarasota in 1985-86...won the leagues Northern Division title in 1985...managed Juan Gonzalez and Dean Palmer in their first professional seasons in 1986...the Rangers minor league hitting instructor from 1987-89...worked with little league baseball in Dallas from 1977-82 and managed the 1982 Sandy Koufax League world champions.

 

Playing Career: Was drafted by the Rangers in the 19th round of the June, 1973 draft and spent 4 years as an outfielder in the club's minor league system...Batted .365 in his 1st pro season at Sarasota in 1973.

 

Amateur Background: Played 2 seasons at the University of Texas in Austin...Was a member of 1973 team that placed 3rd at College World Series...Also played one year at Panola Junior College in Carthage, Texas...Earned all-American and all-conference honors and led junior colleges in rbi in 1971... Played baseball and football and ran track at Dallas' Sunset High School (graduated '70)...Also participated in Little League, Babe Ruth League, and American Legion programs. Personal: Spent the off-season coordinating hitting workouts at Ameriquest Field in Arlington...elected to Texas Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003...hobbies include hunting...Rudy and his wife, Shelley, have 2 children, Julie (6/24/71) and Justin (12/6/78).

 

 

 

 

 

Some baseball people (Ozzie Guillen, Omar Minaya), think that Rudy is ready to step in as a manager.

 

I'm not saying he is the best candidate, but he deserves a look.

 

With our offensive struggles, Rudy can add a lot of value.

 

The Rangers have lead the league in HR, 4 out of the last 5 seasons. Look how all of those young hitters are doing (Texeira, Young, etc)

but i dont know if the numbers that texas puts up has more to do with that stadium than jaramillo.

 

the home/road splits for that team show a significant drop off for a lot of those players

We already have too many candidates.

i dont really see him leaving texas except for a managing job, which i dont think is for him. he is fine as an expert hitting coach.
