GM's Philosophy

Featured Replies

I read somewhere that Fredi Gonzalez was asked about his philosophy because the Marlins FO think it is important that the manager and GM have similar philosophies. We all know there was a schism between Beinfest and McKeon this past year because they had different philosophies. So, my question is, what is Beinfest's baseball philosophy? I know a few of you have commented on this, most notably Rferry. Does anyone know?

Offer ridiculously one sided trades that often cause nausea from fans and local media.

Draft 1,203,992,949 young high-school pitchers, yet no proven college players (Hansen) or blue-chip position players.

Create teams built around the three run homer while playing home-games in a pitcher's park.

:shifty

What do I think he said: a team that mixes youth and experience and is set up well for both the short and long-term; or essentially "no comment."

Beinfest has stated his philosophy many, many times.

Populate the team with players who will outperform their contracts.

How would that contradict Jack's philosophy, though? I got the impression that the manager and the GM weren't on the same page this past season... that's why I ask.

I can't speak to this with any authority or first hand knowledge but my sense was Jack's complaint was that the FO was dictating who would play for reasons other than to put the best team on the field.

For example, I believe Jack wanted to make the Cabrera/Lowell switch sooner but because the FO was trying to trade Lowell, they wanted him in the lineup. The same goes for Encarnacion, who right up until August 31st, the FO wanted to trade. Had Jack had his way, were it not for injuries you would have seen alot more of Willingham, not to mention Conine (much sooner), Hermida (sooner)and Aguila.

I can be 100% wrong but I don't think so.

Okay, makes sense. In that case... I think we should let the manager manage to win. I agree with what Jack wanted to do. We might have made the playoffs if we had made the Miggy/Mikey switch sooner and bring Hermida up sooner. Although, I am not totally sure that the FO was opposed to all the things you mentioned... I mean, they brought up Miggy in 2003.

But they didn't bring up Jeremy in 2005.
