Why don't the Marlins wait to trade JP and Lo Duca after the market settles down? Why don't they wait until teams get desperate, so , there could be a bidding war. I do not understand why all they are completely dismantling the team within two weeks and probably getting nothing for our veterans except for some minor leaguers. Why don't they wait until teams start to panick?

Furcal signed in LA, Cubs should probably be panicking right about now in their quest for a leadoff hitter.

 

There were bidding wars for Lowell/Beckett and Delgado. And teams are now apparently in a bidding war for Lo Duca.

If Damon signs with the Yankees or stays in Boston, the Cubs' will be beyond desperate.

Why not wait until Ramon Hernandez and Ben Molina are signed and then trade Lo Duca or until Johnny Damon is signed and then trade JP? I mean their value will go up and then listen to the best offer. Instead of trading Lo Duca to the Met's so quickly for a useless minor leaguer. I think Beinfest can and has done better moves than this.

I suspect the Marlins have targeted certain players they want to trade for with a number of teams and if they have the opportunity to trade for them, timing is not the issue right now.

 

That said, I don't disagree that there might be some value in waiting.

 

On the otherhand, a case could be made that it's better to get this over with than waiting, waiting, waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Eh, I guess to a degree, but I'll be exceptionally disappointed if we don't come away with a catcher or centerfielder for the future from either of these remaining trades, and I don't care if we have to wait until the July 31st deadline if that's what it takes.

Yes, but don't you do not make good choices when you rush them. You should analyze the market around you not just trade for the sake of trading.

The primary goal is to get the best value possible. Timing can either be immediately or delayed depending upon the offer being presented. In the case of Castillo and now LoDuca and Pierre it would seem waiting would gain better value. There is still plenty of time left in the off-season....so waiting a few more weeks to execute these trades couldn't hurt.

Because you'd be dealing with fewer teams to negotiate with. While you're also fighting the team's interest in prospective other available players, generally you'd find that a team will be more willing to negotiate than be exploited. Relationships are key in baseball.
