December 12, 200520 yr No it would appear he isn't in the top 17 percent of those in the 'pool' for super two status. I'm thorougly confused. He's in the top 17% of everyone in the MLB, let alone his 'pool'. Does someone want to further explain 'why' Cabrera and D Train are different year FA's, or are we goin to have to piece it together? edit: ahh...Does it mean top 17% of service time? In that case, ok. Service time, that's all free-agency is calculated by. 6 full seasons of major league 25 man roster time.

What is that number?

What is that number? I'm pretty sure it's 162. Look at AJ, he was in his 7th year here, but he only reaced that 6 full season (972 games) service time requirement in his 7th year. You could be craptastic or spectacular, doesn't matter, just accrue 6 full big league seasons of service time and you're a free agent.
December 12, 200520 yr Ya, believe it or not I learned that through playing baseball simulation games (OOTP) Anyway, if that 162 number is correct, then how did D Train get it? Is it including playoffs?
December 12, 200520 yr Both Willis and Cabrera will have 6 years of MLB service time, and will be eligible for FA after the 2009 season. (2004 - 2009). 182 days (opening day to end of season) count as a full year of service. Time on the DL and active roster count as service time. Players are eligible for arbitration after 3 years of service. For Cabrera that means after the 2006 season. A "Super Two" player is eligible for arbitration after two years of MLB service. This is determined by an arbitrator and generally happens with a starter whose stats are comparable to top players at that position. Willis is a Super Two so is eligible for arbitration this off-season. So Willis gets 4 years of arbitration and Cabrera gets 3.

December 12, 200520 yr We go over this every month. Willis is getting 4 years of arbitration due to his status as a 'Super Two', but will be eligible for free agency the same time as Cabrera. You must have six full years, as counted as days on the active or 15-day major league roster, to be eligible for free agency. Not 5 years and 171 days. Not 6 years and one day in the middle of a season. Six full years at the end of a season.
December 12, 200520 yr Next year is 2006 saying we are going to be competitive in 07 or 08 is a stretch even talented prospects take a few years to develope 2009 2010 is more like it Willingham, Hermida, Jacobs and especially Cabs have all already had a taste of the MLB, so it's not like we're putting a bunch of inexperienced players on the field. Willis, Vargas and Olsen already have experience (Olsen not as much, but still). If you look at the difference between 1998 and 2006, it's that we have a little more experience with the youthful players--if that makes any sense. The biggest gaping hole in my opinion is the bullpen, but if Bowyer and Resop develop accordingly, that situation should be resolved. 2008 is still a ways off, but it's not out of the question to suggest we will compete by then We were still firesaling well into 1998. We actually have a nucleus here already for '06 without the Todd Zeiles.
