The Russian Olympic hockey team is STACKED...

Pavel Bure put together a nice little team :thumbup .

Russia's Olympic hockey team loaded with NHL players

MOSCOW (AP) ? Alexander Ovechkin, the 20-year-old Washington Capitals rookie, is among the 19 NHL players on the Russian roster for the Torino Olympics announced Friday.

Alexei Yashin of the New York Islanders, Alexei Kovalev of Montreal, and goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin of Chicago also made the 23-man roster that features 11 players from the 2002 bronze medal-winning team.

One prominent NHL figure Ovechkin won't face is 18-year-old Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby, who was passed over by Team Canada. The two phenoms are widely considered to be the future of the NHL.

Team general manager Pavel Bure said the difference between NHL rinks and Olympic rinks ? where there is more space between the end boards and the nets ? was taken into consideration in choosing players.

"We paid attention first of all to so-called 'skating' players," he told the ITAR-Tass news agency. "Also, we tried to give preference to the 'universals,' those who can best go into the game with different tactics against different opponents."

Other NHL players on the team: goalies Evgeni Nabokov (Sharks) and Ilya Bryzgalov (Mighty Ducks); defensemen Andrei Markov (Canadiens), Alexei Zhitnik (Islanders), Darius Kasparaitis (Rangers), Fedor Tyutin (Rangers), Danny Markov (Predators), Anton Volchenkov (Senators) and Sergei Gonchar (Penguins); and forwards Ilya Kovalchuk (Thrashers), Pavel Datsyuk (Red Wings), Viktor Kozlov (Devils), Alexander Frolov (Kings), Maxim Afinogenov (Sabres) and Alexei Zhamnov (Bruins).

I really wish I cared--seriously. I see you fanatical about hockey and I truly wish I had the same passion...I just don't. Back in the days of Vanbiesbruck (sp), Mellanby, Jovanaowski (sp) I was pumped about the Panthers...but hockey has no meaning to me now.

Than don't post in the thread. :thumbup

The Russian Olympic hockey team is ridiculous. So is the Czech, Finnish, and Canadian teams. This has the makings of an exciting olympics.

They're retards for leaving Crosby off.

I didn't mean to soil the thread. I hope you all didn't take my post negatively. I posted my envy of your position of fandom.

Heck of an offense, so-so (or at least underachieving in the NHL) defense and goal-tending. They'll get a medal, but the gold is Canada's to lose.

Gretzky built that team to win the gold, not put on a horse and pony show.
