Reserve catcher Ramon Castro re-signed Tuesday with the New York Mets.

Castro, 29, inked a one-year contract reportedly worth $800,000 US, a nifty raise from the $500,000 US he earned last season.

He will back up newcomer Paul Lo Duca, acquired last Dec. 4 for minor-league pitcher Gaby Hernandez and a player to be named.

Castro averaged .244 in 99 games last season with eight home runs, 41 runs batted in, 26 runs scored and a mere three errors.

He missed 16 games with a strained right quadriceps.

Castro has a lifetime .222 hitter with 26 HRs, 94 RBIs and 66 runs in 305 games over seven MLB seasons.

The native of Puerto Rico joined the Mets as a free-agent on Dec. 23, 2004, following six seasons with the Florida Marlins.

Will serve as a great backup catcher for the New York Mets, great defensively, showed great clutch in 2003 and has hurt the Marlins wearing a Mets uni, nothing major, but a good signing. Yes I remember he came from the Astros organization as a top prospect, tore up the minors, but never amounted to nothing in the bigs.
