Griffey to Boston?

Griffey To Boston For Arroyo?

Well, Boston Dirt Dogs has an interesting one up just now. Boston's WEEI 850 is reporting that a possible Ken Griffey Jr. for Bronson Arroyo trade could be in the works. I'll do my best to find more.

On the surface, that seems like a terrible deal for the Red Sox. Arroyo is about to be locked in for three years at a great price, and Griffey is probably a lock to play less games in '06 than he did in '05. Not to mention Griffey's huge contract and lousy defense.

Getting Griffey With it?

From the "Take It for What It's Worth" department: WEEI's John Metaparel had a "scoop" this morning that the Red Sox were interested in Cincinnati's Ken Griffey Jr., who could possibly come to Boston in a trade involving pitcher Bronson Arroyo.

Arroyo just signed a new contract yesterday that includes a gentleman's agreement that he wouldn't be traded in the off-season.

Plus, he took a lesser deal to stay with Boston for the next three years. If this deal was believeable (which it isn't), the talks would be starting with Matt Clement...not Bronson.

I don't believe this for one second.

Not to mention Griffey is far from reliable in terms of durability

Or even above average defesively anymore. He's slow, injury prone, and overpriced. Besides that, he's awesome. :plain

Well, if the Red Sox could get a Griffey for Clement swap working, it would give them a pretty formidable lineup, and I think the Sox would get the better end of the deal.

Doesn't solve their leadoff problems though.

I will say this, if I'm a Red Sox fan, I like the idea of Griffey in Fenway a lot more than Gathright or even Reed (both will take far more to acquire).

Yeah if you put him at DH he would be David Ortiz.

What the hell are you talking about? Is that some attempt at a lame put down?

If the Red Sox are smart they should go after....

No Passion, it is just the truth.

How is Ortiz injury prone or overpriced?

I couldn't care less if he is slow, he isn't a center fielder. Griffey isn't a viable option at center field anymore. His defense actually negated his offensive production last year per his defensive range.

You are a clown and a tool to even defend Griffey against Ortiz at this point.

Make Ortiz play CF everyday, or even 1st base, and his numbers would come down. Make Griffey a DH and his numbers go up. Please how often do you watch the Reds? Griffeys defense isn't even that bad. its not good anymore, but it is not awful.

If you put Griffey at DH, they are virtually the same player. I am not even saying the Red Sox should trade for him because if they did that he would have to play CF, but Ortiz and Jr. are very similar players. And you taking that as an insult towards Ortiz is laughable. I mean who wants to be compared to one of the greats ever to play the game?

LOL. How often do you watch the Reds without blinders on? Like I said....Griffey's defense was so bad last year...it negated any offensive contribution he made last season! (Source)

How can you say they are similar now, offensively?

2005 VORP: (Rank In MLB)

Ortiz: 85.8 (4th)

Griffey: 59.2 (24th)

2004 VORP:

Ortiz: 71.3 (15th)

Griffey: 26.4 (129th)

2003 VORP:

Ortiz: 48.5 (49th)

Griffey: 18.9 (167th)

Ortiz made 5,250,000 last year. Griffey made 12,500,000. Do the math.

Passion....you really don't want Michaels.....His defense isn't that good...as a matter of fact, Phillies fans basically held their breath every time he had to make a play.....Offensively he was good as a platoon player but i really quesiton what he could do fulltime.

Michaels would pretty much just be a spare part, not a long term solution.

I dont want the Sox to do something stupid when Ellsbury is only like 2 years away from being ML-ready.

The price for Reed or a Crisp is too steep. Michaels could come at the price of Mota and that is it.

Michaels had a near .400 OBP and he had a pretty good OPS. Im interested to see what he could do with 400+ ABs.

I can take arguably the poorest defensive outfield in the majors if it prevents us from dealing one of our top 5 prospects or going after someone like Torii Hunter. With or without the aforementioned we will still contend next year, and be stronger in the future for not pulling a desperation move. I have faith in Ben and Jed.
