February 21, 200620 yr Miami Herald Culpepper option? Sources said Miami and Minnesota have talked about a possible trade that would involve quarterback Daunte Culpepper. BY JASON COLE jcole@MiamiHerald.com The Dolphins have held talks with the Minnesota Vikings over the past week about a possible trade involving Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper. Two sources confirmed the talks, with one saying the Vikings have approached ''a limited number of teams'' about Culpepper. No terms about a possible deal were available, however one source said the price for Culpepper will be more than the second-round pick that both The Minneapolis Star Tribune and Profootballtalk.com reported last week. The Dolphins are extremely interested in Culpepper among a short list of veterans they might take a look at. Among the others are Tennessee's Steve McNair and Washington backup Patrick Ramsey. Coach Nick Saban has said on at least two occasions this offseason he would like to acquire a young quarterback for the team to develop, but with some of those options possibly limited, Saban could turn his attention to a veteran. Saban has become progressively concerned about filling the position during the offseason. The Dolphins are very interested in Vanderbilt quarterback Jay Cutler but feel he might be drafted too high in the first round for them. The Dolphins have the No. 16 overall pick. The team also is interested in Clemson's Charlie Whitehurst and Alabama's Brodie Croyle. However, Whitehurst and Croyle are not considered as strong prospects as Cutler. All of that has caused the Dolphins to take a further look at veterans such as Culpepper. Culpepper, who missed the final nine games of last season with a significant knee injury, is due to receive a roster bonus of $6 million in mid-March, and will make a base salary of $2 million next season. He is under contract for the next eight years with his salary at $5.5 million in 2007, $6 million in both 2008 and 2009, and topping out at $10 million in 2013. Culpepper asked for a pay raise at the end of January, irking the Vikings' management, including new owner Zygi Wilf. Culpepper struggled through the first six games last season after a breakout 2004 season. Culpepper compiled 4,717 yards passing in 2004, with 39 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. After seven games of the 2005 season, he had thrown for 1,564 yards, with six touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Culpepper was lost for the season Oct. 30 against Carolina when he tore three of the four ligaments in his right knee, requiring surgery. The surgery was performed by Dr. James Andrews of Birmingham, Ala. It is unclear when Culpepper will be able to return this season although he hopes to play by at least October. Culpepper is expected to be ready for some drills at the beginning of training camp in late July.
February 21, 200620 yr I wouldnt give more then a conditional pick next year. I would Not trade a 1st rounder for culpepper in his current situation. He is an elite QB when healthy but he is not healthy. Conditional pick depending upon preformance 3rd rounder - Doesnt play/plays poorly next year 2nd rounder if he plays 10+ games 1st rounder pro bowl year I think that situation is fair for the vikings to perhaps get more or perhaps get less.
February 21, 200620 yr Just sign Brees. The deal Culpepper signed isn't exactly tiny so why not offer something similar to Brees, and keep the pick(s).
