February 22, 200620 yr NBC has decided to lay the smack down on its moribund Saturday-night schedule, bringing professional wrestling back to its airwaves -- at least for one night. On Saturday, March 18, the network will reintroduce "Saturday Night's Main Event," an updated version of the World Wrestling Entertainment extravaganza that ran on NBC in the 1980s and early '90s. "The original 'Saturday Night's Main Event' was a pop culture phenomenon with a rich history of big moments," says Vince McMahon, chairman of WWE. "We promise to make the new 'Main Event' in primetime on NBC even bigger and better." The first incarnation of "Main Event" served as an occasional replacement for "Saturday Night Live" reruns from 1985-92. It featured numerous championship matches and stars such as Andre the Giant, Hulk Hogan and Randy "Macho Man" Savage. In its new incarnation, the show will bring together stars from both WWE franchises, USA's "Raw" and UPN's "Smackdown!" NBC says the March 18 special will feature current champs John Cena and Kurt Angle along with Triple H, Randy Orton, Trish Stratus, the Undertaker, Rey Mysterio and others. It will also serve as a platform to promote the WWE's "WrestleMania" pay-per-view in April. "Saturday Night's Main Event" is the first WWE programming to air on NBC since the much-ridiculed XFL, created by McMahon, hit the network in 2001. The company's "Monday Night Raw" returned to USA last year after five years on TNN/Spike TV.
