March 13, 200620 yr KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Bobby Cox plans to manage the Atlanta Braves for at least two more seasons. Cox signed a one-year extension of his current deal Sunday, keeping him in Atlanta through 2007. He is seventh on the career wins list with 2,092, has guided the Braves to 14 division titles in a row and captured the last two NL manager of the year awards. "We feel that Bobby is the best manager in the game and his leadership has helped the Braves to set a very high standard of excellence -- not just in major league baseball, but in all of professional sports," general manager John Schuerholz said. Cox, 64, a four-time manager of the year, has kept the Braves on top of the NL East even though they have slashed payroll and lost many of their top players in recent years. Last season, Atlanta won another division title with 18 rookies making it to the big leagues. Cox is entering his 25th season as a major league manager -- 21 of those with the Braves. He managed the team from 1978-81 and returned in 1990, one year before the team began its unprecedented run of division titles. "I'm still energetic with the game," Cox told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "I've still got the passion for it. When I don't, I'll probably just walk away." The only blemish on Cox's record: The Braves have one World Series title to show for all those playoff appearances. Schuerholz and Cox are baseball's longest running GM-manager duo, an arrangement that will last for at least two more seasons. Schuerholz's contract also runs through 2007. Terms of Cox's deal were not disclosed. "His compensation, which is private, remains the same," Schuerholz told the Journal-Constitution. The paper reported that Cox earns about $2.7 million a year, which puts him among baseball's top five managers. Yankees manager Joe Torre earns $5.5 million a season. LINK

Yeah, that's a good point, considering the strong relationship they have.
