MARLINS NOTEBOOK

McKeon keeps faith in Conine

Veteran remains cleanup hitter despite slump since joining team

BY CLARK SPENCER

cspencer@herald.com

Manager Jack McKeon said he's sticking with Jeff Conine as his cleanup hitter even though it has been slow going for Mr. Marlin in his first week back with his former team.

''I think it's a case of him coming over here and wanting to do well immediately,'' McKeon said of Conine, who had batted .138 with the Marlins going into Tuesday's game against the Mets.

Conine had only four hits -- all singles -- and two RBI in his first eight games with the Marlins, hardly the sort of numbers the team was hoping for when Conine was plucked from the Orioles after Mike Lowell went on the disabled list.

He responded Tuesday by going 2 for 3 -- including a key single to open the ninth inning -- to raise his average with the Marlins to .188.

Previously, things hadn't been so good for Conine. He had gone 1 for 11 -- including 0 for 3 Monday -- with runners in scoring position since joining the team Aug. 31.

''I'm not making any excuses,'' said Conine, quickly dismissing the suggestion that he's going through a re-acclimation process with National League pitchers. ``I just have not done the job yet.''

McKeon said he has told Conine to ``relax and have fun.''

But the manager said he's hesitant about taking Conine out of the cleanup spot because the team has continued to win despite his slump.

''It's been semi-bearable since we're winning,'' Conine said of his struggles. ``We're in a pennant race right now, and I want to be in the middle of it and want to do everything I can to win. So it's doubly frustrating.''

Conine just hit a game tieing home run!!!!!!! his first HR for the marlins this season WOOT!! :jump i knew he would come around soon GO FISH!!!!

a scout's take

Don't underestimate what Jeff Conine could mean for the Marlins. That was a huge pickup for Florida. He's professional, solid as a rock and commands respect. He brings as much in terms of intangibles as anyone in the game. He's a winner. Plus, he has a knack for driving in big runs. A lot of guys can beat up on mediocre pitching, but he hits consistently hits good pitching.

Ramp, I am so glad you brought that up. I was just coming here to post about his homerun...but then I wanted to show how he matches up with the Braves. Here are his stats:

.351AVG, .406OBP, .975OPS with 8HR and 38RBI in 151ABs.

He does hit good pitching and he does hit it well.
