Monday, April 3

Dontrelle Willis, LHP (0-0, -.--) @ Roy Oswalt, RHP (0-0, -.--)

Scouting Report:

After leading the Major Leagues in victories in 2005, Willis (22-10, 2.63 ERA in 2005) enters the season three wins shy of matching the franchise career victory mark of 49. A year ago, the D-Train was 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA against the Astros.

Oswalt (20-12, 2.94 ERA in 2005) has recorded 20 wins in each of his last two seasons, earning his 20th last year on the final day of the season. He allowed nine hits and four runs over six innings in the Astros' 6-4 win over the Cubs, clinching the Wild Card berth. Oswalt has more wins than any other Major League pitcher since the beginning of the 2004 season with 40 (40-22), one ahead of Bartolo Colon (39-22).

Sergio Mitre, RHP (0-0, -.--) @ Andy Pettitte, LHP (0-0, -.--)

Scouting Report:

Acquired from the Cubs, Mitre (2-5, 5.37 ERA in 2005) provides some big-league experience to a young rotation. He faced the Astros once last season, giving up two runs in seven innings while not being involved in the decision.

Pettitte (17-9, 2.39 ERA in 2005), the Astros' Pitcher of the Year in 2005, struck out 171 hitters, the second-highest total of his career. He ranked second in the Majors with a 2.39 ERA, a career-low. He went 14-2 with a 1.56 ERA in his last 20 starts of the season from June 20 to Oct. 1, leading the Majors in ERA and wins during that time span. He won 14 of his last 16 decisions and allowed three or fewer earned runs in 31 of his 33 starts.

Brian Moehler, RHP (0-0, -.--) @ Brandon Backe, RHP (0-0, -.--)

Scouting Report:

Rebounding from 2003 Tommy John surgery, Moehler (6-12, 4.55 ERA in 2005) logged 158 1/3 innings last year. In some ways his record was deceptive, because in the first half he was 4-6 with a 3.27 ERA. But veteran has more confidence throwing his changeup than he did previously.

Backe (10-8, 4.76 ERA in 2005) recorded career highs in almost every statistical category in 2005, including wins, innings, starts and strikeouts. The Astros are 21-12-1 (.625) in games started by Backe, dating back to his first career start on Aug. 21, 2004. The club was 14-10 in his starts in 2005.
