May 11, 200620 yr Looks like the good folks running the show decided to revive the immigration bill. Sounds optomistic, although the dems probably lost some minor aspects of the original bill...It also says the Reps lost some of theirs too. Might it get passed before Memorial Day? Wow, that would be huge. Here's hoping for the best! http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/sou...-home-headlines
May 11, 200620 yr yaaaay make illegals legal before the immigrants who tried to get into the country legally.

May 11, 200620 yr Make my mom jump through tons of hoops, pay a bunch of money, etc. when she could've just strolled over from Mexico, picked oranges for a day then become a citizen? Pure crap.
May 11, 200620 yr Make my mom jump through tons of hoops, pay a bunch of money, etc. when she could've just strolled over from Mexico, picked oranges for a day then become a citizen? Pure crap. Yeah. My freakin' great-grandfather had to go from Turkey, to Brazil where he lived for a while, and then finally the US. I won't even get into my other half of the family. This is ridiculous, if they are going to make the illegals become citizens for free, what will it say to immigrants who want to come here through all legal routes? That they can just enter the country and use this bill to become a citizen automatically. What does it say about being American? This bill actually weakens our security because lets just say that there is some whackjob al-qaeda guy among the illegals. He gets citizenship because of this bill and then has to be afforded all his rights.
May 11, 200620 yr It took my dad almost 20 years to get his citizenship from Canada after living here in the US. It's ridiculous to reward these people for invading our country and breaking our laws.
May 11, 200620 yr :plain (directed at everyone but Lefty) lefty made his points but i also think everyone that has posted her has made valid points themselves... well except the canadian, lets be real, its Canada. you cant hate on someone who went through all this trouble to legally get their residency and citizenship for feeling resentment towards someone who just had it all awarded to him or her with the mere signing of a law.
May 11, 200620 yr :plain (directed at everyone but Lefty) lefty made his points but i also think everyone that has posted her has made valid points themselves... well except the canadian, lets be real, its Canada. you cant hate on someone who went through all this trouble to legally get their residency and citizenship for feeling resentment towards someone who just had it all awarded to him or her with the mere signing of a law. it's not that simple. the people who are here illegally are basically living in the shadows, risked their lives to be here, live in constant fear, and are exploited day in and day out. they live through a lot of hardship while they're here (and their employers benefit immensely by their presence), so it's not exactly true that they get their residency handed to them. plus, the plan put in place would legalize those folks that have played by the rules, worked hard, paid their taxes, and haven't gotten into their trouble. we're not going to legalize people that are lazy and mooch off citizens. rather, this would reward hard work and recognize the economy's need for these workers. i think the fact that others have waited a long time to get their residency does not mean that we shouldn't legalize those people that are here undocumented. rather, it means that we have a broken system that doesn't give a rat's ass about immigrants - legal or illegal. people should not have to wait 10 years to be admitted into this country. if they meet the requirements they ought to be let in. that means the immigration system is broken and way too bureaucratic. let's fix that, and let's also legalize those people that have been here playing by the rules.

May 11, 200620 yr They came in illegally because employers need them. This is an economic issue. Anyway, we're never going to agree. We just have vastly different perspectives.
May 12, 200620 yr Author You guys make it seem like they will become citizens tomorrow :lol :lol :lol First of all, they will have to work to get residency, let alone citizenship. They will have to pay off a large sum for each illegal alien. They will have to pay off some back taxes (or so I assume) This is not a free ride. It's a lengthy process that will probably take years for each. Some of you are being ignorant.
May 12, 200620 yr ok..I see the frustration of people who come here legally. But I agree with prinmemito. You guys say it like they cut in line at the ice cream parlor and are laughing about it. A lot of these people have been through hell. A lot of them have left their children or other family behind. Let's not pretend that there hasnt been any sacrifice. Yes legal immigrants, my parents being two, have dealt with time and other difficulties. But if they had snuck into this country, I dont think their experience would be any easier. Also, Carlos Mencia is a terrible comedian. He is not funny. He needs to stop trying to be Dave Chapelle. He isnt that good. This has nothing to do with the issue. I just really hate Carlos Mencia.
May 12, 200620 yr i dont think people are saying illegals have an easy time or anything like that but they are ILLEGALS. you can't act like this is a victimless crime because once they are legalized and they bring all their families all the people on the list to immigrate legally will have to wait all the longer. you are giving people who broke the laws and went around the system a pat on the back and all the people who want to follow the rules the middle finger. not everyone who wants to immigrate here and want to become a citizen can just run across a border and now they just have to wait longer. the illegals came here to make money i don't think they would care if it was america, canada, france, where ever it was they were crossing the border into as long as it offered them the all mighty dollar and the chance to thrive. if bush wasn't so soft on this issue and just continued the system clinton was running this wouldn't even be as big of an issue. clinton tried to clamp down on companies who hired illegals and bush completely cut that off that way of dealing with the problem.
May 12, 200620 yr I agree that there could definitely be adverse affects for people who are on waiting lists right now. Im not sure how this system is going to work, but if it alters the overall quotas for legal immigrants, I would be upset too.

Absolutely breath taking. :plain (directed at everyone but Lefty) I think everyone gets the right to an opinion priinmemito. It might be disagreed though of course I am very conservative when it comes to the borders. I think the fines should be upgraded hugely upon companies that are allowing them work. I think they should also be removed from the country and forced to apply for legal immigration and follow the Correct procedure. It is there for a reason and the system does work as I am sure many on these boards can attest to. :thumbdown I am totally against these bills, but I will respect that others disagree with my very strict opinions upon the subject. One of the things I used to like for Bucannon (sp it is early need coffee to make mind thing spell)
May 12, 200620 yr Fishfan79, my straight face was directed at people that were making absolutely ludicrous conclusions. Some made it sound like it's easy for illegal immigrants to live here and then get residency if the bill passed. That's just not true. You can have your opinions on stuff, that's fine. However, it is important to not say things that are absolutely wrong and not true. I do agree that people are entitled to their opinions. I prefer to read through well-informed opinions, though.

I know dude and wasnt meaning that statement there to come of with me thinking you didnt believe they should. If it did my apologies for that This is one of those hot button issues that I doubt anyone will be happy with the result fully. Funny how they always pop up before important elections just in time to make people forget what they have been feeling about the canidates for months and months :mischief2

May 13, 200620 yr Author So those in the know, or more in the know than me.... Is it possible that we'll see a bill passed by Memorial Day, as the article suggests?
May 13, 200620 yr It is quite possible, but we had a deal in place before that just unraveled at the last minute. So who knows? I wouldn't make any bets one way or the other. I will say this, though. The Republicans that are in favor of it want to get this done as soon as possible - and as far away from the midterm elections as possible. The closer we get to the midterm elections the less likely Republicans will go along. They don't want their base pissed off at them a month or two before the elections. If this thing is going to pass this year, it will pass by mid-June at the latest.
