May 26, 200620 yr Hot Stove redux John Donovan, SI.com To the Cubs: Juan Pierre To the Marlins: Sergio Mitre, Ricky Nolasco Cubs GM Jim Hendry needed a leadoff man after losing out on Furcal, so he came up with the hardworking Pierre, who has continued a downward slide (.230, .269 on-base, worst in baseball at the leadoff spot) that has plagued him for the past two years. Mitre, after seven uninspired starts for the Marlins, is on the disabled list with a sore shoulder. Young righty Nolasco has been pretty decent, appearing in 13 games, including two starts, giving up 27 hits in 28 innings with a 2.89 ERA. Edge: Marlins To the Mets: Carlos Delgado To the Marlins: Mike Jacobs, Yusmeiro Petit Jacobs took over for Delgado as the Marlins' every-day first baseman after the team's winter salary purge but, clearly, Jacobs is no Delgado. The young (he's 25), lefty-swinging Jacobs has shown some power, but not much, and he's hitting only .220. The real value in this deal for Florida, other than saving money, may come from Petit, recalled after the injury to Mitre and stuck in the bullpen, where he's thrown five innings and given up four hits. As for Delgado, where would the Mets be without him? He has 15 homers and 33 RBIs, both tops on the team. And what does spending a little money mean to that team? Edge: Mets To the Red Sox: Josh Beckett, Mike Lowell To the Marlins: Hanley Ramirez Ramirez, the top prospect in Boston's system, has been a steal for the Marlins. He's hitting .335, he has a .411 on-base percentage, he's stolen 16 bases in 19 tries and, after a rough start, he's calming down in the field. Right now, he's the best shortstop in the NL. The Sox gave up a lot -- three young pitching prospects were included with Ramirez in the deal -- but they've made out well, too, with right-hander Beckett already a rotation mainstay (7-1, 3.80 ERA) and third baseman Lowell (.323, a baseball-best 21 doubles) enjoying a bounceback season. Edge: Red Sox http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=cnns...cnnsi&type=lgns Obviously I think it is way to early to actually judge the ultimate outcome of these trades, but at this point in time I think that John Donovan has it right. Pierre has been very dissapointing for the Cubs, and although Mitre hasn't been great, Nolasco has been a pleasant suprise. I agree that the Carlos Delgado trade goes in favor of the Mets right now, because Carlos is having a great season, but ultimately this one will probably go to the Marlins, nothing against Carlos, but at 34, he only has a few very productive seasons left, and Petit has the ability to be a real star. And I'm really diggin Jacobs. Finally the Red Sox trade, at first I thought that we got the better deal, and Hanley has been incredible, but after looking past my Marlins bias, Beckett (7-1) has been the backbone of the rotation, and Mike Lowell... well apparently he isn't so washed up afterall. Glad to see it. This is another trade that over time, depending on how the pitching prospects develop could probably end up in a wash.
May 26, 200620 yr I just love some of the trades we made with the cubs especially when they over paid for Pierre
