June 9, 200620 yr Based oon a 2000 calorie diet, how many calories should a person burn a day to keep fit? First, what are your goals? For instance, if you normally take in 3,500 calories a day (which is more close to the norm than 2,000), then taking in 500 calories less a day should enable you to drop one pound per week. But if your incorporating exercise with the reduction in calories you will increase your metabolism, burn more calories and your body will appear differently than if you just cut calories (by just cutting calories you will be losing muscle mass along with fat). A simple rule of thumb for simply losing weight is to decrease your calories while burning more through weight training and cardio (running, biking, stepmills). Some sports such as baseball are anaerobic sports (they fail to maintain an elevated heartbeat which is essential to burning calories). All in all it depends on what your definition of fit is. Does the person want to simply lose weight (combination of fat and muscle) or do they want to lose fat and gain muscle?
June 9, 200620 yr Well, I'm 24, 5'10" and about 210 or 215 pounds. I've decided that I really need to get in shape and purchased an exercise bike. I'm not sure what my average calorie intake is yet, which is why I asked based on someone who takes in about 2000 calories a day, about how much should I lose. I have a very seditary job which is why I bought that bike. Yesterday I burned about 2000 calories on it, but I didn't know if that's enough, too many, or too few.
