June 25, 200620 yr Part of an article here for beradino, it seems we are honestly part of the bidding war, pretty impressive to see. What is everyone's thoughts on this kid and if we can get him? BIDDING WAR When Tony Pena signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates back in 1975, he received a signing bonus of $4,000. His youngest son, Francisco, is going to blow that modest sum away when the international signing period opens July 2. It will probably take seven figures to nab the 16-year-old catching prodigy, who has been around his father and baseball throughout his young life. "This kid wants to play baseball," said Tony Pena, a coach with the Yankees. "He's crazy about the game. He has really matured, and he's still growing unbelievably." Considering Frankie Pena already stands 6 feet 2 and 200 pounds, that's a scary thought. The Yankees, Mets and Braves are expected to be among the strongest bidders for the younger Pena, but the Marlins have shown preliminary interest as well. Tony Pena Jr., Frankie's older brother, is a shortstop prospect in the Braves organization. "Those kids grew up seeing baseball," Tony Pena said. "They were always on a big-league field, playing around. They know the game and they enjoy doing it. The only thing they see is baseball. Everything we do is about baseball. It's amazing the way they picked it up." Frankie Pena has been a catcher since age 9 and shows some of the same flair his father did behind the plate in a career that saw him make the All-Star team five times and win four Gold Gloves. But the elder Pena cautions not to expect the son to be his clone. "He's a natural," he said. "I don't want him to do it just to be like me. Like I told Junior, they have to make their own name. My success is part of their success, but now they have to do their own thing." http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/sfl-mik...la-sports-front
