Buccaneers Sign Jay Fiedler

Featured Replies

The Bucs on Thursday signed quarterback Jay Fiedler, a former starter with the Dolphins, to a one-year contract to back up incumbent Chris Simms.

After Luke McCown tore a ligament in his right knee last week, the Bucs immediately began searching for options to bolster their shaky stable of quarterbacks. They quickly zeroed in on Fiedler, a 34-year-old veteran of 12 NFL seasons.

But there is a slight injury concern with Fiedler, too. A shoulder injury sidelined him for most of 2005 and he hasn’t been cleared to practice, though he expects to get that clearance by the start of training camp July 27.

Fiedler will compete with backup Tim Rattay and sixth-round draft pick Bruce Gradkowski, but would seem to have the inside track at becoming the No. 2 quarterback. Fiedler has experience in the Bucs’ offensive system, having worked with coach Jon Gruden in Philadelphia early in his career.

Though Gruden and McCown expressed hope McCown could return this season, there are strong indications he will be placed on injured reserve, meaning he could not be activated after the start of the regular season.

Interesting. Hopefully for your sake Passion he doesn't sniff the playing field and sits happily on the bench.

He is a great guy though the time I met him at a Dolphins function a few years ago.

Agreed.

I don't mind the move as it adds depth to a pretty solid core of backups in Rattay and Gradkowski. Competition is always a good thing.

Especially with the freak injuries happening to QB's the last few years. Hopefully Jay's injury from last year is fully healed. To be honest if I had to pick a backup I def would have Fiedler in my top 5.

I don't even know if he will make the team. Gradkowski will be on it, so it will come down to him or Rattay.
