In the not too distant future Vargas will fade out. He's nothing more than a top tier draft pick that didn't pan out.

he's been in the majors for all of 9 months lol

You've watched him pitch. Do you actually see good stuff? Do you see potential? I don't.

I am against infatutation with mediocre players that ultimately aren't good enough for the show. That's something characteristic of the Orioles, but I'd hate to see it with the Marlins.

Jason's dwindling trade value plummeted even farther down yesterday. Petit's trade value has plummeted as well.

have you watched mark buehrle pitch? tom glavine? kenny rogers? what kind of "stuff" do you see with those guys? you don't need a 96 MPH fastball with a sharp offspeed pitch to be successful...many of you may think you do because of who we have/have had come through our system (beckett, penny, burnett, nolasco, johnson, olsen, etc, etc.)

vargas has a great change - if he can control his stuff he'll be a very effective starter. i think, over time, he will and plenty of you guys will be eating "crow" :shifty .

No, I am not just talking about a 96 MPH fastball.

ok.....?

First of all, if he is a lesser version of any player I would say he would be more in line with a left handed version of Maddux...not Glavine. Sure control is a large part of it but late movement on a ball is also a big help.

Not every player that can't through 96 MPH will acquire pinpoint accuracy or have the mental capacity to fend of pitchers.

For players that don't have overpowering stuff, you fall in two groups. The elite become the Greg Madduxes...the rest become the Ismael Valdezes.

Teams on a budget need a fifth starter, and figuring that the team is both:

a) Really good much sooner than anticipated

b) Lacking a good centerfielder/bat to protect Cabrera

and you figure at least a few of our players on our current roster are going to have to be dangled for that bat to protect Miggy and/or a centerfielder.

Eventually, the team can't have an all-star at every position and through the rotation, sure it'd be nice, but unless Loria suddenly decides that he can spend MLB's revenue check instead of pocketing 3/4 of it, we're going to need to develop guys like Vargas to fill out the roster.

No, I'm not super high on him, I never really was (I was an Olsen guy from the beginning, lol), but I realize his value and I'm not anywhere remotely ready to label him as a bust, or a player without a future.
