The Minnesota Twins traded right-hander Kyle Lohse to the Cincinnati Reds for right-hander Zach Ward.

More to come when it moves on the wire

Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - The Cincinnati Reds continued their wheeling

and dealing at the trade deadline Monday, acquiring pitcher Kyle Lohse from

the Minnesota Twins in exchange for minor league pitcher Zach Ward.

The trade was the second of the day for the Reds, who also picked up lefty

reliever Rheal Cormier from the Philadelphia Phillies.

Lohse was just 2-5 with a lofty 7.07 earned run average in 22 games, including

eight starts, for the Twins this season.

The 27-year-old right-hander began the year in Minnesota's rotation, but was

sent to the minors on May 17 after a 2-4 mark with an 8.92 ERA in eight dismal

starts. He was recalled about a month later and had worked exclusively out of

the bullpen since.

Lohse has a career record of 51-57 with a 4.88 ERA in 172 big league games,

including 152 starts. He had back-to-back winning seasons in 2002 and '03,

then suffered through consecutive 9-13 campaigns before this year's

difficulties.

Ward was 7-0 with a 2.29 ERA in 20 games, including 18 starts, for Dayton of

the Single-A Midwest League. He had 95 strikeouts in 114 innings pitched and

allowed opponents to bat just .188 against him.

The 22-year-old right-hander was selected by the Reds in the third round of

the 1995 draft.

Loshe has been one of the most unlucky pitchers in baseball this year, and has a 2.84 ERA in 19 innings out of the bullpen.

It will be interesting to see if we use him as a starter or reliever.

I won't lose any sleep over trading Ward.

Twins acquire Ward for Lohse

Obtain Minor League righty, who was 7-0 at Class A Dayton

By Kelly Thesier / MLB.com

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Twins and the Reds finalized a trade on Monday that sent right-handed pitcher Kyle Lohse to Cincinnati in exchange for Minor League right-handed pitcher Zach Ward.

Lohse was 2-5 with a 7.07 ERA in 22 appearances for the Twins this season. A member of the Twins rotation at the start of the year, Lohse made eight starts before being demoted to Triple-A Rochester on May 17 after going 2-4 with an 8.92 ERA.

Twins general manager Terry Ryan had been shopping Lohse to other clubs since the demotion. Lohse rejoined the club as a reliever in early June but problems between him and the organization made him a clear trade target as the trade deadline approached.

Ward, 22, went 7-0 with a 2.29 ERA and 95 strikeouts in 20 appearances -- 18 starts -- this season with the Class A Dayton Dragons of the Midwest League. Ward was the Reds' third-round selection in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft.

The trade was also the second this season between Ryan and Reds general manager Wayne Krivsky, a former assistant GM for the Twins.

The Twins are expected to use the open roster spot for Torii Hunter's return from the 15-day disabled list prior to their game against the Rangers on Monday night.

Lohse apparently will be in bullpen

Just got off a conference call with Kyle Lohse. I asked him if Wayne had said he would be moving into the rotation here or staying in the bullpen. His response:

"As of right now, I believe I?m going to stay in the role that I?m at. Ultimately, it?s up to him. I think they?ve got some good guys there, and we?ll play it by ear. I?m ready to do whatever it takes to help the team out."

Interesting. We may trade for a SP by the end of the day...

i just saw something on espnews that said lohse will probably be used out of the pen

He will, according to Junior's post
