Nov. 1, 2006 MEMPHIS, Tenn. - In a special ceremony between the first and second quarters, on Sunday, former Tiger baseball standout and Major League Baseball All-Star Dan Uggla will be honored with a presentation of his jersey. The Tiger football team will also honor former All-American tailback DeAngelo Williams by retiring his jersey in a pre-game ceremony. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. with the game to be broadcast by ESPN. Uggla lettered at Memphis from 1999-2001 before being selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 11th round of the 2001 Major League Draft. The Columbia, Tenn. native was the lone rookie to make this year's Major League Baseball All-Star Game, was tabbed the Sporting News National League Rookie of the Year and is one of the top candidates for the 2006 National League Rookie of the Year Award. Uggla is just one of four Major Leaguers in the last 50 years to hit more than 20 homers and drive in more than 75 runs in their rookie season. The other three are Frank Robinson, Orlando Cepada and Albert Pujols. He became the second Tiger ever to earn recognition as one of Major League Baseball's top performers as he was named as a reserve on the National League All-Star team. The only other former Tiger to earn All-Star honors was Montreal Expos hurler Charlie Lea, who got the starting nod for the N.L. squad in the 1984 Midsummer Classic. Uggla played five seasons in the Diamondbacks' farm system. He made the jump from AA to the Majors when he was picked up by the Marlins in the Rule 5 Draft in the off-season. He hit .297 with 21 homers and 87 RBI with the Diamondbacks AA-affiliate Tennessee Smokies last year, but opened eyes in the fall when he hit .304 with seven round-trippers and 22 RBI for the Peoria Saguaros in the Arizona Fall league. In his three years at Memphis, Uggla played two years under Jeff Hopkins and one under Dave Anderson. He hit .258 with just six homers and 35 RBI in his first two campaigns, before having a breakout junior season in 2001. He earned TPX Louisville Slugger All-America honors as well as all-district recognition his junior season. A First-Team Conference USA performer in 2001, Uggla led the Tigers to a 34-24 finish and the nation's top turnaround in Division I baseball. He hit a team-best .379 and set the program's single-season record with 28 doubles. Uggla's 2001 numbers rank in Memphis' single-season top-10 in runs scored (72, 5th), RBI (67, 2nd), home runs (18, t-2nd), slugging percentage (.790, 2nd), total bases (169, 2nd) and walks (42, 8th). He finished his career ranked in a tie for fifth on Memphis' all-time doubles list with 40. For his career at Memphis, Uggla hit .313, drove in 102 runs and belted 24 homers.
